Having been disproportionately responsible for the drop in the number of wine bottles over the 4 days ........ I don't dare comment?

Sadly my old and faithful mitre saw has become unreliable. I could possibly live with inaccuracy but NOT inconsistently. It was a Ryobi and has served me well for many years

The usual barrage of tool-selling emails advised me that Festool was running an EOFY sale including the KS60 Kapex and, although I would prefer and probably need a KS120, a KS60 was going to have to do. It arrived only a few days later but, by that time, a domestic decision had been made that it would be for my birthday ........ in July!
For a few weeks I made as much noise as I could and came in covered with dust until, on OHS grounds, the new saw was released from quarantine.
i was then concerned about the KS60 fitting in to the existing mitresaw bench and fence BUT, after offering it up, the KS60 only required 3mm of vertical packing then alignment and fixing in to place. To align the saw to the fence, I clamped a squared and straight baulk of timber to the fence and then clamped the KS60 to it....

By the end of the day, I was back in business making no noise ...... nor dust.

The problem with accurate tools and machines is there is now way to blame the tool any longer.

Are you enjoying the soft-start of the Kapex (rather than the kick-like-a-mule Ryobi)?

I guess I’d got used to the Ryobi fighting back and kicking me in the guts but that has meant that that the Festool starts like a woose?
Mind you, that could just be the Sunday afternoon red wine talking?

I made a new dust collecting hood for the KS60. Dust collection with the retired Ryobi was hopeless with a large amount of swarf and hence dust, ejected TOWARDS the operator! THE KS60 at least ejects its swarf out the back where it is picked up by the R2D2 style of shop vac. So far, the hood has only the shop vac fitted but, in the next few days, it will be incorporated in to the automated dust collection system via the 150mm port on the LHS.

The 2 smaller holes in the sides are to give enough clearance to allow the saw to rotate and, if they allow dust to escape, I’ll put a simple flexible flap on the outside face. The top and upper part of the back are transparent and the extra light comes from a LED light fitting laying on the top.
It is already a vast improvement on the old arrangement!

Tip: in addition to what you are doing, take a length of hose from the saws outlet and either attach it to or just stuff it down the 150mm pipe will help to direct that ejecta direct into the ducting.

Thanks Bob, I know that Glider did the same thing in his new workshop and is very happy with the result. At this stage though, I’m planning on leaving the R2D2 attached directly to the saw and use the shop system to evacuate the hood? The issue is that IF the DC is not already operating, it takes about 10 seconds to wind up to speed and, in that time, I’ve normally cut the bit and I’m halfway back to the bench? I’ve installed a foot switch that currently turns on the shop vac and the light and provides power to the saw which gets me ready in about 3 seconds. When I have connected the 150mm duct, the foot switch will still start R2D2, turn on the light, make power available to the saw AND start the main shop DC?
Gosh that sounds complicated ...... it seemed so clear to me before I knocked off tonight

We need a mind reading control switch - one that turns on the DC before you need it.

    NOW you’re talking Bob!
I’ve already been looking at ways to automate turning on the kettle immediately the DC times out after 12pm!

I have a similar problem. To partially get around this, rather than turn the DC on-off all the time I often leave it running at 40Hz which as well as being much quieter also uses ~40% less power. When I switch the VFD to 50Hz it then takes only 2 seconds to get to that speed. What would be handy would be a remote switch that as well as turning the DC on, would also change the speed. This should not be difficult - just need to get around to it!

Good idea Bob! This ‘problem’ really only exists in ‘lone warrior’ workshops like yours and mine but what we (ie Auto Blast Gates) are finding, is that, in multiple user workshops like Men’s’ Sheds where there are multiple triggers turning on the dust collector, we have included a timer so that the DC stays on for a selectable time after the last machine is turned off. A time of 15 minutes seems to result in the DC operating continuously and so the mitre saw issue goes away? I solved my own VFD noise problem by fitting a thermal switch on the VFD’s own cooling fan ( an idea that I think you may have given me?) and this reduced the DC noise to a low rumble.
I can see NCArcher right now thinking of remote control of speed, time, mitresaw usage prediction AND turning on the kettle!
