on the other hand, a well-lit ceiling (and walls, etc) will provide a diffuse light around the whole room, so that when you get in close to your work you don't immediately cast a heavy shadow on the very thing you're trying to see
a direct and highly directional light is great, but only until you block it

Change over done.
GC is correct; "Prima facie the fluoros emit a lot more light but it radiates 360° whereas the LEDs are much more focussed."
The LED tubes light OK, but don't project the light as far as Fluoro's.
The electricity savings sound good. thanks Bob.
I have 2 double tube fittings in my garage/workshop area.
Sufficient for most things, but I think I will need something additional in some circumstances.
