    Default Ranbuild price rise

I've ordered my new Ranbuild shed and paid my 10% deposit and am currently waiting for the permits to materialize. Now Ranbuild tell me there will be a price rise at the end of the month and I will have to pay extra. I mistakenly thought that once I paid the deposit my price would be locked in. Are there any other increases or charges people have experienced that I might expect?

I'm amazed they can do it.
I would of thought you had a invoice/contract with the price on it and the fact that you had paid the 10%.
Does the back have really small print that you pay the price at completion date?

Unless the contract explicitly states that the final payments are subject to price rises I think you have a good leg to stand on - once you sign a contract you've entered into it in good faith that the signed off price is the price - I would take it to consumer affairs.

+1 for what Bob said. I would think this would be grounds for termination of contract.

When I got my quote they told me they had a sale on until the end of the month. I told them I needed permits and I couldn't take delivery until they came through. They said they would ring up and see what Ranbuild could do. After contacting Ranbuild the dealer said that they would hold the price and sent me an email indicating they would. The dealer has been very good to deal with. Last week the dealer rang me and told me about the price rise. I was surprised and thought they may have been putting the touch on me so I rang head office today, the Ranbuild rep said, "Mate, we have had a price rise and we have to pass it on". If I was Mr Ranbuild I would buy in enough steel to cover existing orders if there was a price rise on the way. I would not alter the price if I had told someone that it was locked in.

+1 for all the above pretty much you pay a deposit to hold the price. It IS the REASON you pay the deposit, if you don't pay a deposit you wont be quoted a price from a month ago etc you will be quoted the current day pricing. Business people wonder why consumers/customers shop around? It is because of businesses run like this. Buy a dictionary take it in with your contract and show him the definition of deposit - to give as a partial security for a debt.
he doesn't have much of a case, well maybe his mates down the pub will be on his side

On their website they tell you if you place your order before the end of September you'll beat the steel price rise. I placed my order before the end of September but I didn't beat the price rise. Ranbuild - News - Beat the steel price rise and save!

I have given this a lot of thought. I had done research and from all reports they make a pretty good shed. However, I don't like the way the price went up after the contract was signed. The way I see it I have 2 options. A) Pay the extra price and get the shed or B) Ask for my money back. I'm only talking a couple of hundred dollars on a $9,500 shed. The money is not the issue, its the fact that they did it. I may have to pay more somewhere else, I may get a lesser shed, I don't know. Anyway, I rang today and asked for my money back. The dealer is going to talk to the manufacturer and get back to me.

The problem now is if they decide to honour the original price do you still buy it from them knowing what they tried?

I did it with a new car 30 years ago, another dealer was prepared to give me a better price but only after he heard the first dealers price.
I got the car from the first dealer who was upfront and told me the price that it would cost.
    (it was only 50 dollars).

Its not always the price its the way your treated.

I don't know how this will play out. They may try and enforce the contract at the new price, they may refund my deposit with some sort of deduction or they may honour the original price through gritted teeth. If I proceed and there is bad blood it will make it uncomfortable if I need any sort of after sales service like missing parts or assembly help. At this stage things are civil with myself and the dealer and I would proceed if they came back and said the original stands. But I would want, for what its worth, some sort of firm commitment that there would be no more shenanigans.

By paying a deposit you've entered into a contract!

Ranbuild is holding the current steel prices until the end of September so if you get in quick, you’ll make big savings now.

Place your new shed order with your local Accredited Ranbuild Dealer before the end of September to beat the steel price rise.
This is patently false advertising and your within your rights to make a legitimate complaint to consumer affairs.

You need to do so - such that THEY learn to stick with what they advertised.

You placed your order, by paying your deposit!.

    You locked in the saving!

    THEY are in the wrong.

THEY have breached their contractual obligation.... thus - the contract is thus null and void and your entitled to a full refund of your deposit.

RANBUILD, will be fully liable for any costs you've incurred, in good faith as a result of you honoring the contractual obligation & Consumer Affairs will make sure your compensated.

If I were you - I'd be asking to speak with the general manager of the company and point out the error of his staffs ways!.

It's only by speaking up that your interests will be protected.

    My 2c.

I'm always skeptical of doing that. I figure if the general manager was any good then this situation wouldn't arise in the first place.

Ranbuild are fully owned by Lysaght and on their website they say things like:

"Customers demand more than simply the best building products. They also want the best service and the best support. At BlueScope Lysaght we've always ensured that the calibre of our people matches the quality of our products."

"We value knowledge, experience and a commitment to customer service."

"Our strength is in choosing to do what is right. This is our commitment."

After the support I've received from people on this forum I've decided to pursue my grievance and have sent an email to Lysaght and asked for the contact details of the top man so I can raise my concerns. I can only hope their idea of doing what is right is the same as my idea of doing what is right.

    Good on you Arch.

Not only will you be doing yourself a favour but helping all of us. Part of the reason why WA has such high prices for "stuff" is that there are too many newly monied people including the government that just blindly pay whatever is asked and if asked to pay more they just do. You can bet the old monied people don't do that and neither should anyone else.

Australians are very poor at asserting their consumer rights. I'm not saying we should be pricks about it but calmly ask the questions and constantly calling their bluff is an accepted way of doing business anywhere else in the world.
