    Default rats!

Lots of things I want in my new shed but rats are not on the list!

Just went out to grab a couple of tools and disturbed two rather large rats checking out my new bench, I say disturbed but they seem less concerned about my presence than I was of theirs

Much that I dislike them, I'm loathe to kill them so I guess at night the shed is theirs.

No rats. but a little while ago, my shed was just crawling with mice. I wonder what is worse? A couple of rats, or hundreds of mice?

I would still be looking for someway to move them on.

I you have seen 2 then there are probably dozens

Get rid of them as soon as you can. Just kill them.

No poison - it ends up with the birds etc.

traditional rat traps are good, peanut butter as bait

You can get those 60 litre containers with a lid. Cut a circle in the top, Put a piece of dowel across and put the peanut butter in the middle, So a round trap door in the top (you need a rubber band under the lid to pull lid shut again) . 20 litre bucket also works. Let em fall inside alive. Lake em down a creek or park and let em go.

If they are real rats, exterminate them. They are introduced feral mammals which can outcompete the indigenous marsupial wildlife (for resources and in reproduction), signature to Australia's image. Plow them under.

Some lovely rat bait will do the trick, they then crawl away and die a slow, indsidious and ugly death. This is a good option when you don't want to bang them with a shovel, like I do

I have to use the shed as a garage. When the car was in for servicing the mechanic spotted rat droppings under the bonnet. He gave the same advice.
It's also amazing what they will eat.

I haven't noticed any rat droppings so maybe they were just dropping by to check out the new tenant.
Assuming they are none natives, then I'll get some traps - if nothing else it's an excuse to visit the hardware store.

There aint no such thing as two rats!
Garbage bin filled with water to within 6" of top. Sprinkle either chaff, bran, rice hulls or shavings over water surface. A food can be floated in centre to speed up interest. Empty bin weekly. No more rats.

Hmm, that would be an excuse to add an air rifle with a night scope to my armoury
Try to look unimportant, they may be low on ammo.

    Not good Geoff

Rats have become a real problem seems there are many down in Canberra an infestation this has spread to all states

I submitted a few links regarding Rats and illness caused in another thread, very serious, so do a google search and get some baits or seek prof help to get rid of them.

1 rat cost us nearly $1000 about 10 years ago.
I now have several bait stations permanently in the shed and renew the baits every time they look a bit stale or have been eaten.
Living in the country, we also have a mice problem, but not in the shed.

Don't be sympathetic to these rodents, they are a menace.
