Roof height measurement
Is there anyone in the know about what the councils mean about a shed roof height. We allowed 2.4 meters and wondering would the standards be 2.4 from the slab to the pointy part of the roof or from the slab to the angled part where the roof slopes up to the pointy part.
I already have a garden type shed with a decent 40 x 40mm SHS frame and I've relocated to outback Queensland and the council allows a 2.4 mt H x 3.0 mt W x 6.0 mt L without a building permit and mine is roughly 2.8 mt to the pointy roof part, 3.2 mt W and 6.3 mt L so shortening the length and width isn't an issue but should I need to lower the roof that's going to take a few extra cuts and welds.
Since I'm 2 hours from the nearest town I've tried phoning the council but they were of no help so I'm hoping someone might have had past experience or know the allowable height and whether the height is as per A or B.Last edited by Specialized29er; 29th August 2019 at 02:29 PM. Usually they would be referring to the highest point but I would be checking the wording they use or contact them to clarify what they want

The 2.4 metres would be the height of the walls not the height of the roof at the ridge.

The following is an extract of relevant information;
The mean height is the vertical height of the building, and may be determined by the following calculation:
- Total elevation area of the wall of a building/structure facing the boundary
- The horizontal length of the building/structure facing the boundary
Needless to say the information above is complete and utter jibberish. Clearly written by a total oxygen thief bludging off of the public purse likely because they couldn't keep an actual job in the real world.
The above information is extracted from the Toowoomba shire councils website and is relevant for everywhere in QLD.

Looking at the above reference, the maximum height seems fairly clear
”When it comes to sheds and building approvals, size matters.Sheds less than 10 m2 (length x width), having a mean height of less than 2.1 metres, and a maximum height of less than 2.4 metres with a side no greater than 5 metres in length, are deemed to be accepted development and therefore do not require a building approval; however, you must ensure that they are constructed and located to comply with all relevant codes.
The mean height is the vertical height of the building, and may be determined by the following calculation:
- Total elevation area of the wall of a building/structure facing the boundary
- The horizontal length of the building/structure facing the boundary”

So by that calculation, it would be the maximum height. What the neighbours see standing back and looking at the shed.
Building with a permit would, in Victoria at least, consider also the setback from the fence. So 2.4m at minimum setback, 3m further in and so forth.

I just had a look at that document and the way I read it the maximum height of the building is 2.4m which has nothing to do with wall height but overall height so it would be ridge on a gable or the highest part of a flat roof
The other criteria was to do with control of the bulk of the building.
To build bigger than that that you will need a DA application

Thanks guys so A it is, the shed is only for workshop storage stuff until the next 6 cooler months when we'll setup the workshop shed which will need the council approval.
