Security System in the shed
Hi All
The Wife and I will be heading off again soon there will be no body in the house or my shed if it got broken into, although we are insured I would not be able to replace some of the tools that belonged to my grandfather, and that is of some concern to me!
So I have decided to have a security system installed either by myself of have security firm do the job.
I was hoping that there would be other woodworker that have dealt with this. My shed is away from the house and when I leave it I always turn the power off I was hoping that there is a system that is wireless and battery back up The house is about 20 m away from the shed thank you

The Tools.
Hi Colbra,
The other thing I did was I took 88 Photos around My Shed / Garage, & the Insurance Co. has them as well as Myself & Family. They are all on CD.Regards,

Buy two external alarm lights, and mount on both the house and shed. Add some window stickers and the job's done. Just as effective as a real alarm system, with minimal cost.

I can tell you what a friend friends did to his place. It appears that his mate was an electrical engineer and he had developed an electric fence system to control elephants in Sri Lanka.
He wired his roof and surrounds with fine wire. One day his house did get broken into, through the roof, the terrified thief was a crying mess when the police came to pick him up.
This guy lived in a tough neighborhood so desperate measures were required.

My security issue
Thank you all for your valued input! Master splinter I had thought of doing something along those lines myself some yrs ago I had a red cattle dog she would let you in but you did not have chance in hell of getting out until I got home!
It would be too late now to dig her up and stuff her because it’s been 5yrs since she passed on. But will get a video camera as you have suggested.
Isatree I have taken all the photos of my tools but it’s my grandfather’s that I could not replace.
Star that would be easy for me to do as I have an electronics background but if the burglar got hurt he would sue me or I might end up in jail if he got killed
Colbra
PS can you do wood work in jail are there any members that might be able to tell me….

I used to teach woodturning in Sale gaol many years ago.
Our security system is hard wired and does the house as well.
We had a wireless system on the shed with the monitors inside but a truck parked in the driveway one night convinced me that hard wiring was the way to go.

When my shed was build we ran alarm and telephone cables undergound along with the electicity. The shed is a zone on the house alarm so it can be set separately at night.
The system has worked well except for a couple of times we have had rats get into the shed. It's not nice when they trip a sensor at two in the morning and the alarm wakes you up.
If your alarm can be remotely monitored you can set it up so it calls your cell phone rather than a security company. If you are out and you get a call from the alarm you know something is going on.

This is the latest on the security Thread
Hi Bam Bam &
Thanks for your reply’s I have gotten a quote for a wireless back to base system from the NRMA home security they explained things along that line to me. The cost was about $2000?
Now the latest is we are getting a house sitter there are some up this way with good references and we get to keep the two grand on the other hand if I pick up on Stars friends idea and it all goes pear shaped
do you do correspondence as I would be at Long Bay because I live in NSW and not Sale.

Hi Col,
Most systems complying with the code will have battery backup but that is not the real issue. What you really need to consider (if you are still thinking alarm system) is what you plan to do with an alarm while you are away. An alarm will only signal a problem, real or otherwise..... what next??
The number of false alarms will be based upon the quality of the installation, (based upon location and quality of equipment) and often the amount you spend.
Whats next is the most important question.

Thanks Dave for your reply
Thanks Dave I take all on board! that confirmed what our friends said now we look like getting a house sitter because of all the things that you and they mentioned.
When the alarm does go off who wants to have a look at midnight?
House sitter looks better way to go there are bars on the shed windows and I will put two aspen staple on the small roller door along with some dummy alarms and blue flashing lights and stickers.

My shed is 10 mins from home so break-ins are always a concern..
1st line of defence is security lights..(set for bigger than possums)..place lights up like a chrissy tree...usually good for opportunist wandering kids...
2nd line (and my favorite) I collect crates of irrepairable power tools from the local tool guys (usually ozito,xu1,etc etc)... and leave them within easy reach..while the real ones are hidden.....(I'm hoping there's no ne'er do wells reading)...
what if the hokey pokey is really what it's all about?
