Thread: The great shed re-disorganisation of 2018

More photos of where it was at the start. The big cabinet on wheels came from just inside the PA door, which is the empty space in the foreground of the middle pic.

First job was to get that cabinet out as it took up way too much room. It was 600mm deep, but the section to the right of the PA door was only 300mm deep, and even though it was set back from the door it was a right PITA.
So, this happened.

This will end up being the sharpening/charging station. There are benefits of working in a cabinet shop. I traded in some unpaid overtime for the materials.
Next I have to tackle the shelves to the left of these cabinets. The plan is more or less the same except there will be tall cupboards either side of the window and a short bench under the window, and they will all be 600mm deep instead of 300mm.
I also fitted a whirly bird to the roof, which actually forced me to finally scribe the ridge cap that I had successfully been putting off for ten years.

cj, your shed is really tidy incomparison to mine!!! Trying to condense 3 sheds into one, will try to get a pic tomorrow.

You're right. It's actually not too bad in those photos. What you don't see is the table saw, jointer, thicknesser and 2hp DC that I took into work a couple of months ago.

Years ago I had a similar problem where stuff just kept piling into the garage. Something that I did not realise at the time was that everything was stacked on the floor. What I found was putting these items on shelves gave me so much more space and they were sorted. Then you think to yourself that you have so much room that maybe I can get more items?????

Well as it happened I ended up having to move some stuff into my mums garage when moving from Sydney to Albury. We don't have a shed here so it is planned to be built.

Put all the machinery on wheels and add a storage annex for the equipment to wheel out once you've cleared the decks....

I noticed a "highbay light" in your shed too, serious lighting!!

what do you make, what had you rented the other workshop for?

That's the plan. what storage I have at the moment is only 1.8-2.0m high. The height of the walls at the gutter is 2.7m and aprrox 3.2m at the ridge. There's a lot of wasted space there that I plan to use. The new white cupboard is 2.5m high (2.4m high cupboard on a 100mm plinth). I need to utilise the space above the timber storage rack at the other end also. Not sure how to do that though, as the timber rack is a cantilever set up. To build something above that I would need intermediate supports which defeats the purpose of a cantilever rack. I gotta think about that some more.

Almost all of the machinery is on wheels. Only the 16-32 drum sander and an old non-running 12" bandsaw aren't. Not sure if I need the bandsaw, so it might get the heave-ho into the garden shed while I think about repairing it. The sander will get its own table on wheels that I can place next to the workbench and use as an outfeed table. Unfortunately there's no room for a storage annex. My council dictates that my shed (7.5m x 6.0m) is as large as I can go on a block my size. I'm not even supposed to have the garden shed. Sshhh!
The highbay light was just a leftover from the other workshop. I don't actually have any power in the shed at the moment, so it's just running of an extension lead back to the house. Once power is on, I'll probably get some led lights.

Back in a previous life I manufactured timber stairs and balustrade. I gave that away about 3.5 years ago due to personal reasons, and took up a position with a builder whose main work is insurance and maintenance. He has just started a small cabinet shop, and I am helping to get that established. All of my unpaid overtime is going towards the materials for the cupboards.

What about suspending some of the boats/canoes/skis from the roof above the cantilevered stuff? I think I can see 5 hulls so far - you can only paddle one at a time.

Nothing wrong with your eyesight or counting ability.
There are 4 kayaks and 1 canoe. I need to do some culling.
The cantilever rack may end up going, and being replaced something similar to the racks that Fletty has in his shed. Like Fletty I can still access long lengths by sliding them in from the end.

HA! You haven't seen fletty's shed since then. There's hardly a stick of timber stored in them! In fact a few months ago we were discussing building a lean-to on the wall that those shelves are against. Mind you, he did have a clean up a couple of weeks ago....(so he says). I'll have to go and inspect!
