Sturdee's sharpening corner.
Finally, after a lot of effort, I have finally got my sharpening corner of the workshop complete.
It also finishes my journey of learning to sharpen which started out about 40 years ago with an oil stones (still have them ), through the scarey sharp system (still use it to polish the backs of new chisels), various grinders on which I always mucked up the tool's temper through to a wetgrinder and a slow speed grinder matched with the Tormek sharpening system.
It has been a long and expensive journey but now I am getting consistent bevels and sharp tools.
Here a some pictures of my set up.
Photo 1 shows the sharpening bench with the slow speed and wet grinders and the storage shelves behind it. In the cupboard and drawers are scarey sharp sheets, oil stones and all the other sharpening bits collected over the years.
Photo 2 shows the low speed grinder which has 2 40mm 6" wheels and the Tormek bench grinder set up. This machine is fantastic, very quiet and vibration free and I have not overheated any tool in sharpening.
Photo 3 shows the Seppach wet grinder. I have modified this machine by getting a thread cut on one of the arms for a adjusting nut (photo 4) and have moved the power switch and located it on the front of the cabinet (photo 5) and underneath is the remote on/of switch for an adjustable overhead lamp.
Photo 6 show the storage boxes behind the machines where I store the Tormek sharpening jigs.
With this set up which is close to my turning haven and general workshop I have finally started to enjoy sharpening.
Peter.
PS. In my usual style the bench etc was built using recycled materials donated by others.
