Default A second vertical drawer for longer rulers

So the vertical spanner cupboard worked out quite well. And there was now a 30mm gap on the other side of the Saw cupboard. Hmmm. I have a few longer rulers that have been in several spots, the latest of which was to the right of my main tool cupboard, which was working ok, until I recently built a door for it, which opened right. As it is open most of the time, the long rulers mounted on the wall, were now still in arms reach, but hidden behind the door. Slightly awkward around the corner of the now deeper cupboard plus closed door anyway...

30mm. That could work. But 50mm would be better. I had been thinking about 'finessing' (ha) the Festool rail hanger, to make it a tad narrower. As much as too see just how small would be practical as anything. And to replace the particle board and melamine offcuts, with plywood offcuts. Sad I know.

Eye-balliing the saw cupboard, it projects a bit more than needed. About 50mm as it so happens. Hmmm. I could saw off the front and I've got an instant second vertical drawer for the other side!. A cunning plan.

The first iteration of the guide rail hanger - 210mm wide:

I could make the outer pieces from 12mm ply, instead of 18mm chipboard.
And decrease the gap between the partitions from 42mm to 30mm, trim a 3 mm off the dowels...
    A bit here, bit there.

A magnetic spacer shim kit from Fireball Tools came in handy for 30mm packing

V2 hanger up, and now I have a 55mm gap. I can definitely use that.

I took down the saw cupboard and used the track saw to cut 50mm all around the front face.

I decided to rebate in the edges of the ply - not knowing how that/if that would work. Surprisingly, the little Record 043 plough plane worked fine. The 1/4" cutter was not quite wide enough to get the width I wanted, so I used a Stanley 79 to widen the rebate wall. Worked a treat.

I cut some 3mm ply for the back, and screwed it in all around. I deliberately didn't glue it as I plan to replace the front stile with a bit of redgum/jarrah/whatever I can find to match the other vertical tool cupboard on the right.

Made some play mounts, to fit dowels into, Hadden behind each ruler, and there ya go.

The mounting battens behind each ruler give a bit of stand off, to allow easy finger grab. They also give some meat to fit the dowels to, and make it easier to position/reposition each ruler, rather than using a thicker back panel and screwing holes all over it for the dowels. Plus I didn't have any 12mm ply left.

I added a top batten screwed to the saw cupboard to act to limit the drawer falling forward when open, and a corresponding one on the bottom to stop it moving sideways, plus two small stops to prevent it coming out forward.
