They're strutting beams providing mid-span support to the intermediate beams, which in turn support the skillion rafters.
Correction: it's a gable roof not a skillion roof, so what I called the intermediate beam is actually the ridge beam. Shouldn't post before having my morning coffee
Nothing wrong with supporting steel beams on timber studs; it's not conventional but there's no reason it can't be done provided the studs have adequate capacity, which in this instance they should (just eyeballing it).

Well we have a roof frame
Job is coming along nicely and last of weather boards going on bar the gable end over the door
