Default So I might as well start moving in.....

Actually I have to house the longer timbers so I know how many little gates I have to allow for in the metal walls.

Now some might say that this represents a complete vertical rooster, but it is all as planned :

I can either leave that bay open (under eave, and at the southern side), but after I have finished loading the longer timbers tomorrow I'll have a better idea - I may just extend a metal box over the ends. After I have done the woodshop shed extension most of these longer timbers will have been used up.

The hardest thing about loading up this timber is not so much the weight (although I carried around a tonne down in 90 minutes or so this arvo - yep, I'm buggered) but making sure I have all the same profiles collated together in the one spot from all the different stashes. There's timber everywhere here atm - hence the woodstore build!

Y'all can prolly well imagine that I'm just a little retentive about having the same profiles in the same stacks with the longest at the bottom etc.

Weeellll, I'm not strictly a palings kinda guy Matt. That's the longer lengths of the hardwood stash from the Bowling Club raid a couple of years ago. They'll be bearers and joists in the shed.

The owner (or at least her father) was here today doing some ag-line & Flo-Cell work on the vege garden walls. He's a Mechanical Engineer and has worked on large construction projects.

I was quite chuffed when after inspecting the woodstore, he said "this is beyond best practice". I said "Well thanks for that, especially as this is my first erection". "Poor fella" was the response.

    Not bad.

Sometimes it's better to store the longest to shortest from left to right or visa versa. That way if you want a long one you don't have to move 3/4 of that ton to get the ones you wanted and then re-pile it again. The exception is if the short ones are shorter than the spacing of the rack.

    shade!

In Melbourne today you do not need shade.

    You need Shelter.

It is cold (like 7degrees but feels like 2), southerly wind with rain and even hail.
Did I mention rain, of it stopped for about 5 minutes and then started again.

No fun doing any outside work today.

Brett, It's good of you to follow the older timber yard customer service practices of writing the length if the timber on its end to makke it easier for the customer and freeloaders.....

It's amazing how much you can achieve by yourself with a barrow of clamps. To date I have had about 1 hour's assistance (in three separate sessions). Everything else in 19 days of building has been facilitated by the extensive use of clamps - including putting the rafters up (clamp a block 5mm lower than the bottom of one end, put the rafter on the block, go to the other end, clamp it, go back to the block end and raise to correct height).

    Brett,
Are you saying you prefer clamps to people.
Because they hang around all day.
    Are more reliable.

    Default Starting to fill up.

This thing is a timber gobbler!

I started sorting, collating and filling yesterday. I decided that I needed to do the longer lengths before I put the walls on so I know where to put the various doors (I may have already said that?).

However, as it happens it's much easier to fill all but the smaller lengths without the walls on so I am continuing that process first. It also allows me to add extra noggings where required. Yesterday I came to terms with just how much Tallow Wood I have - prolly around 70% of a cube in 2.1m lengths of 4x2, 1.2m lengths of 8x2, 1.2m lengths of 4x4, and one monster post which is about 1.5m of 8x8 or something. No way do I feel comfortable about loading it into one bay with 70x35mm pine noggings so I'm going to add 3-4 4x2 hardwood noggings tomorrow. Nor am I going to load these.....just yet....there's a FTG happening on the 20th Nov.........some may have to sing for supper (aka carry timber for lunch)

In the vege garden we are using Flo-Cell against the wall for drainage,

and I figured it might just make an excellent floor over the 60-70mm layer of sieved clay:

so I put down several panels (they clip together, and it does make an excellent walking surface. Cheap too, apparently.
