Congrats you guys and gal, an oustanding success I'd say.

Beautiful work by everyone. It was such a tough job to pick the ONE to vote for. I actually really like the nesting boxes a lot too, but voted for the amazing oval box. Thanks for all the organizing and moderating and posting and everything everyone. Another successful challenge. May they continue.

I've put together a few comments on each of the boxes. there's lots that could be said, but this is what I most wanted to say about each of them.

Box 1
Loved the storyline and the little chicken for sizing. I was impressed with the use of the knot in one corner of the lid, rather than the centre. Four boxes, - no, Five! not just one!


Box 2
Again, appreciated the battery for sizing. But, gee 5 boxes this time – another wow! I like the grain matching on the box corners.


Box 3
So different, love the novel idea. the Camphor Laurel actually enhances the design, i.e. that's one heck of a unique paint job that 1929 A model ford has!


Box 4
Innovative use of the knot. How did you cut the last piece for this box? must have been verrrry carefully. The lid handle must make the box easier to open, because I reckon this box is tiny! Very nice jointwork – no gaps pictured.


Box 5
Questions – are the end lids bent. laminated or veneered pine? Did you laminate the legs or are they steam bent? How did you cut the lid? How long did it take to build?


Box 6
This box is dangerously hypnotic. do not stare at if for too long.
Any chance of a closeup of the box sides, taken with the lid off, looking down at the splined corner?


Box 7
Good to see the grain on show and uninterrupted (as compared to my box legs). the carving on top was unexpected and made something interesting of what could have been a plain lid. That must have taken a while to carve.


Box 8
This particular piece of camphor must have been very hard to design anything from. Totally agree that the lid is the best spot to display that partiular section of grain.


Box 9
Love the smooth curve of the lid top edges, blending that edge into the rest of the box so it simply flowed. Love the minimalist look of the box overall, letting the CL talk loud and clear.


Box 10
Good Gravy!


Box 11
Excellent use of the plain CL sapwood to break up the CL grain and colour. the use of this suits the box design. Am very impressed with the shape of the corner inserts.


Box 12
The most outstanding feature of this box are the keys. Can you spot them? I didn't see them until the second viewing. They are very neat and nearly undetectable. now that is good work.


Box 13
Kudos for entering the box unfinished. The dimensions on the lid are good. I think the lid edges are the right size for contrasting the lid inner section. Is it possible that your box just might be the largest in size of all the entries? Would love to see it finished.

Thanks for the run down. I pretty much agree with all of your comments on all of the boxes, though I thought that your box deserves kudos for being original and interesting (and very well made!) - which was part of the competition. what are the interior dimensions of the box? It would make a great document holder, though probably not so good for holding flour

Nup, 5 boxes, the smallest is 34mm cubed outside. I mounted a toggle clamp onto the body of my Gifkin jig to mount the slippery little suckers while I cut the finger joints. I had absolutely no spare timber so I needed to make sure I didnt mess up. The knot looks good in the flesh (thanks Wendy) mostly because the boxes are such a close fit that the timber on the lid of box 2 matches the grain on the lid of box 1,and appears to make a base to the knot,

Hi Wendy, the ends are solid pine. I used several templates to route the inset oval that fits over the end of the box, the oval that accepts the 3mm diamond veneers and the oval shape of the end.
The legs are laminated but first I had a different design in mind with tighter curves and so I microwaved the veneers to get tight radius curves. Some of the veneer went a bit haywire and was never able to get them fully back in control.
The lid was cut from two of the staves prior to glueup. At glueup time the whole thing was glued up at once but the lid was wrapped in gladwrap so it would separate. The lid provided some hair pulling changes in shape because the wood was still shrinking (my drawer bottoms have shrunk about 1.5mm since assembly). The main body of the box is constrained but the lid is not and so moves around differently.
I don't know how long it took, but the design took several days of research while I was sick with the flu. In fact if it wasn't for getting sick I wouldn't have settled on this design I don't think. I settled on this shape because it highlights the long straight grain (SWMBO didn't think the camphor would suit my first design). I searched google images for any similar design wooden box but came up with nothing. That alone was a good enough reason to try it. (if anyone knows of a similar design could you point me to it please!). OK I have rambled on enough...
