Draw runners for a desk major project

Hey all
Im making a major project for woodwork (Year 12) and was wondering what you use for draw runners for my partners desk that has 8 draws. Theres many ways such as timber runners,softclose such as blum and your normal steel rollers. My current design has 2 tone Jarrah and Vic ash thats 1600x800 and a 30mm top. So not very light. Im on a meduim buget but i dont want to blow the bank if you know what i mean. Tho my thoughts are that i will lose marks with something like this as im not showing complex woodworking skills such as dovetail joints etc.

There are a couple of threads on drawer runners. Do a search.

If your doing it for marks your probably best off making your own drawers, and ideally dovetailing them. making timber runners isn't a complex task so your better off focusing your work on making really nice drawers.

Assuming you want mechanical drawer runners:

You've got the cheap 3/4 extension plastic wheel ones which are cheap as chips but not particularly nice.

You've got the various full entension type. If you mount them beneath the drawer they are less visible but you have to downrate the load. You can get 45 kg ones for about $15 each (soft close are dearer) and for a desk your unlikely to load each drawer more than about 20 so they would be ok. You can always mount a seperate soft mount device. Have a look at elraco.com.au for some prices on quality hafele runners and soft close mechanisms.

I have found hettich very cheap and I'll be putting in an order with them soon, but I'll be spending a couple of hundred and this seems to attract free delivery. Apparently the hettich are a nicer runner than the hafele. accurides seem to be priced a lot higher in aus. Bunnings have them for about $35 each (soft close).

Check prices on a box of 10 if your doing 8 drawers. The box price can sometimes be cheaper and your left with spares for later.

Thanks i went with the hafele but they only had white ones but that's no big problem. Thanks for the advice
