Default Bosch PBD 40 Drill Press on Amazon

    Hey Everyone,

Just a bit of a PSA, I found a great deal on Amazon Prime for the Bosch PBD 40 Bench Drill. Previously, the best "street" price I could find was around AU$410. Amazon's current price is $246.42 which includes's free delivery for Prime members. The one downside I could find with this deal is according to the delivery info, the drill is "usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months". I wasn't in any real hurry so I was prepared to wait and Amazon don't deduct your credit card until the item is ready to be dispatched. The good news is I just got an email from Amazon stating the drill will be dispatched earlier than expected and the new estimated date of delivery is the 3rd of Sept (I placed the order last Saturday). I reckon that's a pretty good deal and I thought I'd share it with everyone.

    Cheers,
    Mike.

Yep, it definitely has some great selling points (direct drive, price, variable speed, keyless chuck, laser, work light, compactness, digital depth readout, etc) but some negatives as well (hand wheel, throat capacity, light duty and not part of Bosch's Blue professional range). It seems to be a very popular unit in Europe (especially in Germany) judging by the number of YouTube videos of owners pimping them out. Some of the negatives can be overcome (search YT) and the positives definitely outweigh the cons especially at that price point.

Hopefully you get yours soon. Mine was supposed to be delivered yesterday but they've since revised the expected delivery date to this Friday. It's still much better than their original estimate of 1~2 months.

    Hey everyone,

FYI, for those interested in this drill, Amazon AU currently have it on sale for $299 which includes free expedited delivery if you're a Prime member. You will need to hurry as apparently the sale ends in 4 hours.....

    The link is here.

    Hi All
I ended up purchasing one of these very impressed EXCEPT: there is an electrical smell when using. I thought it was because it was new and would disappear with use. I have now used quite a few times and smell is still there. Have others noticed this or should I get it looked at?
    Thanks Andrew

Can't say I've noticed any sort of strong smell with mine, are your brushes arcing a lot?

If they're not, and no part seems to be getting unduly warm, it's probably just a Chinesium plastic issue.

Bosch Bench Drill PBD 40 (710 Watt, Parallel Guide and Clamp Included, in Box)
    by Bosch
    4.6 out of 5 stars 24 ratings
Price: $399.00 & FREE Delivery. Details

should I??? have an old Timbcom pedastal and changing the belts then getting (TRYING) the missus to feel the bloody thing when using it. I bought her a set of drill bits that are YOURS...darling.

But I could use the bench space under that little beast.

I am halfway through making a wizz bang bed for the old drill it looks about twice the size of the Bosch bed, could I adapt it?

I don't know I'd pay $400 for the Bosch, it's a really great unit, but I paid $245 with free express shipping, for that price it was very well worth it.

$400 is sorta getting a bit high really.

I came to the same conclusion also. I just bought a new drill press and strongly considered buying this machine. I too was sick of belts and never having the right speed set because it was too big of a PITA to change it.

For under $300, I would have bought it. $400 was just too much in my opinion and I was iffy about spending $400 then replacing it again down the track with a more expensive item anyway. So I just bit the bullet and bought the Nova Viking. I understand that this price point is not for everyone and you should definitely not listen to me if your budget does not run that far. I sure don't want to sound like the Festool fan club here...

I agree. $399 isn't really a good enough reason to upgrade especially if you already have a pedestal drill. It looks to be the new RRP as Mitre 10 is also offering it at that price and it doesn't appear to be a mid-year saleprice. I reckon around $300 is a good price for it and $250 is a no-brainer.

The Nova Viking is a very good choice! It's a great alternative to the bigger and more costly Voyager!

I've had one of these for a year or so and although I bought it for the adjustable speed, I find the digital depth and the light extremely handy, laser not so much.

I just collected mine from the post office, interesting commens regarding the price in the above. I did a heap of research and could not find anything I thought was comparable even at the $399 delivered that I paid. The reviews for the Bosch were generally pretty positive including in this thread and not so much for other comparable units so just bit the bullet.

Am just a weekend hobbyist so think it will suit my needs and don't think something like the Viking as great as it looks is something I could justify, can just spend the balance on more tools I may or may not really need !.

Checked the Mitre 10 website and thankfully for me at least is back at $399 as would be kicking myself for not being thorough enough in checking the lowest price available.
