The Carter is a good buy if it includes cutters, or the purchaser can use the more commonly found Record 044 cutters.

On further examination the Carter plow plane is a C54 which uses cutters not unlike (or identical?) Stanley No. 45.

You were sort of right both times.....
That particular model of the Carter C54 takes the same blades as the Stanley 45, 55 and Record 050 & 405. The later and more common version of the Carter C54 uses the same blade advance lever as the Stanley 50, 54 and the Record 044. It's missing the narrow blade holder so it can only plough 1/4" or wider.
I have the lever model; it is pretty awful and the fence sits about 5 degrees off from the vertical so is essentially useless unless you attach a cunningly angled piece of wood to it.Nothing succeeds like a budgie without a beak.

Thanks Chief, I thought I was maybe onto something somehow
I remember giving a later type C54 a good look at a TTTG sale a few years ago and thinking the casting was pretty awful and heavy and left it for someone else.
Hard to go past a Record 044 for a plow/grooving plane I reckon.
