Quick forum help please: Gumtree Festool Sander
Forumites, can I ask for a quick person check?
After the heads up from a fellow forum member, I've agreed to buy this Rotex: Gumtree Rotex
It's very good price, and I'm a little wary of dealing with someone I don't know on the internets, so I wonder if someone here could ask if it's still available/make him an offer for the asking price and see what the response is? If it's a no, sorry, it's gone, I'll be happy that I'm dealing with an honest seller.
If you get a 'yes, it's still available', then I'll have to run!
Please post here if you do it so the poor guy doesn't get inundated.

Well, this is a bit interesting...
Given the posts in this thread: Festool Rotex 150 Sander, I had been tipped off to the same sander by a fellow forumite, and hadn't yet scoured all the threads through here before putting in an offer on Gumtree for this sander - completely unaware of your discussions, of course.
Strangely (and I will admit I am a complete newbie to Gumtree, having only registered this morning based upon this ad), I didn't see that there was a prior offer in place, or that would have given me pause too.
I can certainly let you know the outcome of my offer and message.

A couple of comments and not saying the seller isn’t genuine, however the seller has only just joined Gumtree, there is only one picture (of a box), it is a high priced item and may require posting with payment beforehand. I would be seeking more details and photos. If paying by PayPal there is no protection as there is on eBay items. Generally the rule for Gumtree is cash on pickup. Also if the seller gets a lot of enquires it will weaken your bargaining position and some sellers will keep an item available until the deal is finalised.

These are the reasons I'm wary, and Armadale is a long way away.
(And apologies, Peter - we're occupying the same Fe$tool space at the mo! Didn't mean to whisk it away from you!)

Having considerable experience with Gumtree and the seemingly large number of highly supspect enquiries I have had when selling furniture.
Under no circumstances would I enter into any transactions on gumtree that involved me paying for an item from a seller and them posting the item to me.
I would only ever meet face to face snd see the item in person. This is of course entirely up to you and the seller and item maybe quite genuine but you may also find yourself a few hundred dollars out of pocket.

Don’t get me wrong ... I use Gumtree a lot, but it didn’t get the name Scumtree for no reason.
There doesn’t seem to be any code of conduct from either buyer or seller unfortunately. You can’t be sure of anything until cash and goods has changed hands. I have had sellers who have agreed with pickup times only to find they sold it before arrival - to be fair many buyers make arrangements and pull out leaving the seller missing out on other buyers.
Long story short - work within your comfort zone.
The quality of their communication is often a good guide as to how honest they are likely to be.
I have bought and paid for items that were posted without issues, but it was only for items where I wouldn’t be too fussed if I lost my money (still wouldn’t be happy but not the end of the world). $600 without decent photos would be too much of a stretch for me.Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Whilst I know nothing about the seller or item they are selling I wouldn’t be surprised if they consider the item to still be for sale until they have money in their hands.
The old way of doing business is sadly gone, people say they will take an item and never turn up or make an offer that is accepted and don’t even reply so you can’t judge them too harshly if they leave the item on the market
Selling an item on Gumtree is a nightmare

Only one image of a Systainer. You could at least show the contents in the Systainer.
I would give it a miss unless able to see the item in person.

Living where I do S/H stuff is always harder to come by but I would have bought over 20 items up to $800 single purchase from Gumtree in Adelaide and pickup within 2 weeks. So far only had one seller turn me down and he was still trying to sell item 3 months later.
Maybe Ive been fortunate but so far touch wood Ive found all sellers very trust worthy, saying that I know that somewhere its going to bite me.I would love to grow my own food, but I can not find bacon seeds

That advert smells like prawns in the sun. $1090 new, so he's offering a brand new one for $500 off....and it hasn't sold yet?
And no phone number published? No pic of the actual sander? Only just joined Gumtree?
Gimme a break.
He should be able to sell that quite quickly at $800-850.

This last bit is why we've often given lower value stuff away on Gumtree (or dropped at Opp Shop) as opposed to selling it for bugger all. Bugger all sometimes just isn't worth the aggravation you can get from some buyers. And some buyers can REALLY give you a warning feeling in your gut! Thus we subscribe to the rule of never giving out addresses until the day of transaction, and only upon communication with the person via mobile if you had to ever report anything in the event of something suss.
Most of the sellers I've dealt with have been really good, but I've never considered buying anything I couldn't inspect and pickup.
