Edward Preston was ahead of his time and added glass knobs with light filaments to his wooden trying planes where others added striking pads....

Aside from the simply bad taste and destruction of a tool, I've never understood the design obsession for mains connected, unprotected glass lamp globes sitting around.
These people mustn't have kids or pets!
