I was just wondering because unless one pinches one from the side of the road at a constructions site one would need to purchase it, and some pallets can cost around $80-.

    Just a curious question.

    kindest regards to all,

    Wal
I saw a stack out the front of a local business, walked in and asked. They were happy for me to take as many of the unpainted ones as I liked, the painted ones get returned to the suppliers for reuse. You will find most places are more than happy to be saved the dumping costs of the others.

I actually picked up one today that had four lengths just right for the legs of the fold up workbench I'm building. If I didn't need to use about 4 palettes worth of wood plus a couple of new longer beams I'd be in for this one....maybe next year

Oh and the two most valuable things for taking them apart without damage? A hacksaw and a nail punch. Cut them apart them punch from the back and the nail heads pop right up into view.

To pull mine apart all I used was a claw hammer and a dead blow mallet. Hook the claw under the edge of the wood and smack it in with the dead blow and leaver away. Took me about 15 mins. Some seriously long nails came out of it though!!

Definitely needed to be careful taking mine apart - the cross members and most of the slats were pine, but the slats underneath had obviously broken at some stage and had been replaced by four old fence palings in some unidentified hardwood - so two sets of nails and holes to deal with!

Not sure if this has been posted yet but thought i'd add it in, it may help with deconstructions, its really quite good.:[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtPmUZ-k3aI]YouTube - How To Dismantle A Wooden Pallet[/ame]

Kinda dissapointed (but not, cant wait for next years), i can't enter, not on long enough time in the forums, and to be truthfull not really ready yet toolwise. I think i've got some great project idea's (not sharing just yet - but i will later).

Really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

thank you wendy, That gives me a bit more time to do the final touches. I won't tell my wife I have the extra time. If she knew, she would just give me a couple more jobs, and there would go my extra time.
