Thread: Can you use pyrography tool on darker woods

Not really unless you burn your moniker into the wood and use a white marker pen to highlight the burnt part.

Well... you can. At least, I do.

But it is correspondingly harder to read, of course. On the darker woods it's more like engraving with a pyrography pen.

So on my darker turnings I only use it to label the wood species and - on pieces I'm particularly proud of - my moniker. I usually gotta peer closely at it to make it out, but at least the info is there.

I have just read your post! I do not have any input to your questions on making wood darker using pyrography.
What I would like to make comment on is a friend of mine who is a Master Craftsman in cabinet making and also a carriage builder he has been restoring vintage motor vehicles for more than 40yrs namely Rolls Royce Daimler Bentley and other vintage cars of this status he has done them for people all over the world.
To get back to making wood darker colors he told me of a technique of using hot sand in different grades it was just a broad explanation on the technique, he had a grandfather clock that he had made many years ago and it had birds flying around the face of the clock the colors of the birds went from a light fawn to almost black and all the shades in between.
They were all inlayed into the timber work. If I was at home I would like to take a picture of the clock and put it on the forum that is if he gave me the ok to do so I am on the road for the next 9weeks in the van with the “CEO”.
