    Default Moulding using vacuum press

Would it be ok to use a vacuum to mould leather.
The mould would need to be clean and crisp.
    Thanks

You might have to explain a bit more.

I take it you have a one-sided form, and wish to use the vacuum press to pull the leather up against the form.

I can’t see why it wouldn’t work, except perhaps that the leather needs to substantially dry out in the mould - would the vacuum press allow it to dry out?

Also, don’t forget, it needs to be vegetable tanned leather. The more common chrome tanned leather is not really mouldable and is unlikely to come out of the process ‘clean and crisp’.

And - biggest tip - put a couple of drops of dishwashing liquid in the water in which you soak your leather (wets it out quickly and evenly, so acts as a surfactant I guess).

Also, I should have said, in my experience the quality of the end product has much more to do with the characteristics of the leather that goes into it then the actual moulding process. The process itself is fairly bulletproof and has tended to work ok regardless of method.

Thanks Arron. I think that the vacuum will dry it sufficiently well.
Thanks for the tip re the soap in the water.
I have just gotten a vacuum pump and system and was thinking latterly.
I'm no leatherworker. But want to do it. I have acquired a lot of tools and bits and pieces.
I am looking for knowledge and experience. Hoping to find a course or help in the Newcastle area.
