Another Percy W. Blandford Enthusiast
Hi:I am building a 15’ Kayak as designed by Percy Blandford back in the 50’s and 60’s.Originally covered with canvas or Duck, I plan to use the newer method of ballistic nylon sealed with 2-part Urethane.I obtained the plans from Clark Craft in Williamsville, N.Y. and they are great. I also purchased the original book ” Canoes and Canoing” also by Percy. The British call Kayaks, Canoes. The Kayak is strip Sitka Spruce on 3/8” Marine Plywood Frames. Here are my issues:1 – Sitka Spruce appears to be somewhat difficult to obtain. It is relatively straight grained and has good strength to weight attributes. Does anyone have any idea of availability or possibly even alternates that would be easier to find.
2 – Marine Plywood appears to be easier to find, but there are so many grades and I am confused as to which is best. I need to purchase plywood that will hold up better if damp and have no voids. Is there a specific brand or name to look for?Thank you… Tom Burke (Glens Falls, N.Y.)
