Couple of hours after work.
Got to flip the canoe over and sand and varnish the inside as well as gunnels and decks. I didn’t think the varnish was very smelly til I had to stick my head under the decks to see where I’d been .
Had a bit of a tinker with the sliding seat.
Still looking good for Australia day launch ...Australind ... EstuaryRamps

Varnished paddles
Hi Ramps,
With your paddles you may find varnished shafts cause blisters. An oiled finish is often better, at least where the hands grip. If you did opt for oil, with it being a laminated shaft you would need to be extra vigilant about keeping it oiled as the different woods probably expand differently when wet.
I would love to be present at the launching but unfortunately am working on Australia day.

Thanks Kelvin
I have read this in a couple of places
I have deliberately ignored this for the kids paddles as I figured durability is probably most important of all as I imagine that it is as likely to be used as a prodder, spade or bat as it is a paddle. I have specifically designed in the shaft length according to height and blade area according to known strength and stamina. I have also deliberately made the blades a bit thicker for this reason.
As far as the big kids paddles I will pursue this suggestion as our shafts are solid but I will still varnish the blades.
BTW another coat of varnish on the inside before work this morning.

Do the house! You can't keep a boat like that in the shed. It would go very nicely in the lounge room.
hmmmmm.... Bunbury. Frequent flyer points?Cheers,

Ramps, back in the first post of this thread you said you were only building a canoe instead of a kayak because your family wanted you to, so doesn't that mean you get to build the boat of your choice now?
Any chance you will still be on the Estuary around 18:00? If you are I might come down for a look.
cheers
Kelvin
