    Smile 14inch bandsaws

i am about to purchace a new bandsaw for small free form box making and to suplement my scrollsaw hobby, i was looking at spending around $650 for a basic 14inch model and was looking at the carbatec bas-350b or a basato 3h vario, the basato has a 1hp motor against the 1/2 hp of the carbatec i am not sure which way to go but i have a feeling the carbatec might be a better build! any suggestions would be helpfull.

If you only want to have ONE bandsaw, dont buy a 14". You can do a lot with a 14" bandsaw but their primary purpose is to taunt you with visions of what you could do if it was just a bit bigger.

I started out with a 14" scheppach basato 3, which is a great saw but as a result of the things it could not do I also got a 21' carbatec saw which is used to cut boards from logs and resawing. It is virtually permanently set up with a 1" tungsten carbide blade to do these functions.

All the small stuff is done on the 14" saw. Since I bought the big saw I have done very little on the 14" saw that I could not have done on a good scroll saw.

Now I have never owned or used a 17" bandsaw so I may be wrong here but I believe that if I had bought a 17" saw initially instead of the 14" saw, I may not have felt such a need to get the 21" saw. I think a 17" saw would have been able to have done 97% of what I have done with the two saws I have.

In short if you only want to have one bandsaw get at least a 17" or bigger. It will do most jobs. A 14 saw did a lot but kept me looking for more capacity.

Your needs may be different from mine but thats how I see it FWIW

Hey Dave. Did you make a decision on those bandsaws? I'm at the same stage you were at and wondered what you chose.
    Cheers
