Default $1500 to spend on a bandsaw - what would you get

This has probably been covered many times before here, so apologies in advance.

Here goes...From somebody who has never even used a bandsaw to all you experienced chappies out there. If you were going to buy a brand new bandsaw and had $1500 to spend, what would you buy? And what if you had $2000?

Am going to have to ask the same sort of questions in relation to table saws, thicknessers & jointers, but one thing at a time.

Thanks guys & girls (are there any woodettes out there?)

If you can get a Jet 18" for $2K then go the Jet.

Don't know about 2k saws but I've got the Carbatec SBW 4300 for $1495.00
and reckon it's a very good machine for the money.
Cast wheels as opposed to aluminium on the same H&F model.

    $1500 = Jet 16"
    $2000 = Jet 18"
Saw the 16" at Newcastle show on Saturday, drool dribble slobber, makes my H&F 16" unit look like a piece of crud, but then it was only half the price.

Or a Jet 14", and $600 (or $1100) worth of amber liquid.

    Or wood.

Or (edited by in absentia- saving him the trouble )

    Whatever the drug of preference.

Id definitely get a Jet before a Carbatec or H&F. Er....except I didnt! I got the 3501 but with hindsight, having bought a few Jet tools I would go Jet.

Why don't you scour ebay and the trading post for a good used European saw? I bought a 24" Meber a couple of weeks ago for $1200.00 (It has most of the features of a new one without the $5400.00 price).

Failing that, Felder has a special right now on their Hammer bandsaw which is getting very good reviews in the US. Their was an insert in the AWR showing their special prices now available. Theirs is an 18" saw with 2.5 HP single phase and the usual features. I believe it will have cast wheels and the usual high-end features, the price is 2,198 incl GST.
    Cheers

    my 2 cents

If your budget is that generous buy TWO
Get yourself a Scheppach 8in (yes 8 inch) which you'll reserve for cutting joints and smaller (up to 75mm thick) curved parts.
BUT also get a 16, 18incher or even bigger and set it up for resawing. I'd scour the used machinery sites for a good used one (like the 24" Meber suggestd by Greg) and, if need be, cut a hole in the shed roof to fit it in!

    ian

to set up for a small 12 or 14 incher 2

I you want new the swb4300 takes a lot of beating. I have one too.
Mine cost me $1000 at the wood show a few years ago but I had to buy the roler bearing guides for $100. Got the 2hp motor though.
    cheers
Any thing with sharp teeth eats meat.
    Most powertools have sharp teeth.
    People are made of meat.
Abrasives can be just as dangerous as a blade.....and 10 times more painfull.
