Advice on vintage bandsaw please.
Would appreciate some advice re a vintage bandsaw that is for sale. I will post pics that I have received via e-mail. Two of the pics are only 7KB and don’t enlarge well.
The saw is 3 ½ hours away so will be a weekend trip if I check it out.
Saw is an FW Reynolds and the current owner estimates it is about 100 years old.
All cast iron it stands 5’-6’ tall weighs in around 200 kg. Not sure of motor size but runs at 1440 rpm.
Table is round – is this unusual? Looks as though the guides are a mod as well. Saw has been used for resawing minor species (Huon Pine etc).
I am considering at as a restoration project but am keen to hear what forum members think.

Hi Matrix,
Asking price is $500 but haven't asked whether there is a bottom line yet.

Go for for it! it would be great project and a good user when finnished make up some guards for it though, as for the round table I think I have an old catalogue with one described as a patternmakers bandsaw

If it is in basic good working condition and they are asking $500, then I would snap it up. Those old cast iron bandsaws have it all over these modern day pressed steel bandsaws IMHO. They just have so much mass with all that cast iron. Once properly tuned up and balanced, there is nothing better.
Is it 3-phase? Not really a problem if it is though. I would be surprised if it didn't weigh a fair bit more than 200kg as well.I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Must say I am now really tempted after the postive replies.
Not sure about the phase but will re -motor if I have to.
I also thought that 200 kgs was a bit on the light side after seeing the pics!!!

Have a good check of the condition of the bearings and a thorough look over with a bright LED torch for any cracks in the castings.
If you find any of the above they are generally all repairable/replaceable, but I would be beating them down on the price if any of them were present.
Oh and if you buy it, here is your new favourite forum.
