Bandsaw Binding
Hi Everyone,
I have my new bandsaw, Hafco BP-355.
Sawing a small log of Mahogany and it started off well with 3 small slabs 25mm thick, and now the blade is binding? the saw is slowing down and nearly stopping, I am going slow but it still is doing this.
I also change the blade from 4tpi to a 3 tpi and it is brand new, still the same issue.
Am i missing something?
Regards
Stephen

Is the drive belt from the motor to the pulley tensioned? Sounds like it could be slipping under load
Cheers

Go to YouTube, look for Alex Snodgrass, there's a 35 minute video that will help you no matter the issue you may have work a bandsaw

If it's a log your cutting , it may be binding on the blade as it cuts though the log. Wood has tension and when cut may twist, thus binding blade. This often happens as you approach the heart wood as a band saw blade has a less kerf than a saw blade. Some times it helps to have first cut down the middle, then cut slabs from the half from the center to the outer edge. Just a thought. Tom k

Yes, I agree, I stopped one off the cuts half way through to come inside and look up information on binding and when I went back out to the shed, I could not pull the blade out, it was tight, tight, so much so the saw blade gap had closed up, I had to use a large screw driver to prize open, to feed the blade back out!

It really pays to insert a long thin wedge into the cut at the end of the log as the log clears past the blade and teh kerf is about 150 mm log.
This acts like a riving knife.
However, if the log is too long then it may may still bind so you may need to add more wedges along the top of the cut and underneath the log as the kerf passes past the off the end of the BS table.
Horizontal BS mills allows for wedges to be located more easily on both sides.
