Default Is my bandsaw blade too big?

    Hi WWF,

I just received my new bandsaw blades from chapman saws. I ordered a 1" blade and they sent me a 27mm blade. It is for a Hafco BP-430 (OAV SBW-4300CE).

All the sites I check suggest 1" is the largest blade it can take. Do I risk damaging my machine if I put the bigger blade in?

    Hi Damienol,

The blade is only a couple of mm bigger than stated. THe manufacturers probably erred on the side of caution when setting that dimension.

Put the blade on the saw, with the saw unplugged, as usual when fitting a blade, go through a proper setup, guides etc, and rotate the blade by hand and see if it hits anything. Spin it by hand for a while and look at places where the blade might come close to hitting part of the saw, bearing in mind that a blade may flex backward when cutting.

If it looks like it has enough clearance you should be right.

Other than clearance, another reason a specific width of blade might be specified is the tension required for a wider blade. With the small increase from 1" to 27mm I cant see that it is a problem. Just be aware of the tension you apply to the blade and don't overdo it.

    Cheers

    Doug

    Default Sorted

    Thanks Doug

That was my initial thinking also. While researching the topic I came across the below on the CarbaTec site.

This would suggest to me that I am totally fine

The carbatec 17" is a very similar machine to yours.

Please let me know how it goes.

    Cheers

    Default Update for Doug

After wrestling with the 27mm blade for about 20mins I finally got it in place. I had to pretty much loosen everything I could to be able to manoeuvre in place. As this is the first time I have replaced a blade on the unit I don't know if this is to be expected for a 1" blade. I think I should be able to do it quicker next time.

Re sawed a few 220mm pine boards and it worked perfectly. I will be keeping it
