    Default Bandsaw blade

A little while ago I bought a blade from XXXXX-XXX and found the blade too long. I returned it.

This time I got them from xxxxx bros and 2 93½ ripping blades arrived. 1 fits perfectly and the other one is too loose. I thought what is it with BS blades? Don’t they make them the same length or how hard is it? It is obvious the 2 blades are not identical as one (the good one) can sit inside the other one.

I sent one back and had to convinced them it is not 93 ½”. I measured it a few times and it is 94 ¼”. They measured it and insisted that it is 93 ½”. That is impossible because the smaller is 93 ½” and it fits to my bandsaw. I would put my house on it if I could.

I learnt that they make each blade individually by orders. Interesting isn’t it?

Anyway, They will fix it and send it back to me.

Have you had the same problem before?

I use one of those soft measuring tapes or I run the blade on the floor for 1 round and measure the distance it travelled.

    How do you do it?

I found the advertised size didn't work for me and I needed to go smaller to get the right tension.

Measurement was done by pencil and tape.

I forgot to say they were trying to solve the problem and the conversations were friendly.

Run Her Indoors knitting tape around the inside of the blade. Do it three times and average.

Actually I was thinking of counting the teeth. At 3tpi I should get 280 to 281 teeth. Counting is never my strength so I gave up.

    G'day Wongo,

Been there too, but my problem was the other way around. An old blade was 2375mm so I ordered the same (there's a stack to the story before this bit but I'lll leave that out) fitted it to the b/saw and it just fits with a lot of effort of getting it on. Tension? What's that? The blade on the b/saw now is so tight it doesn't need it.

So I'm at an absolute loss to explain how the old blade I replaced was 2375mm, and I measured it stacks of times, managed to fit on so easily and needed the normal tensioning?

Next time I'll get 2490mm blades. Ideas anyone?

If you have a blade that is the right length, you can roll it out (ie mark the start, roll for 1 revolution, and measure the distance travelled)

If not, you can always use a bit of string to measure the exact distance around your bandsaw wheels- with the tensioner set to about mid way. Not that I've tried this way....

Big dealer like Henry Bros should make the blades in batches. After all there are only a handful of different sizes correct? Why do they bother making it one at a time? Anyone??

Now I think about it, the one from XXXXX-XXX was not accident. It was labelled as 93 ½” but it must be around 94 ½”.

The saw service I use in Newcastle for sharpening saw blades also make BS blades, when I enquired he said to bring the origional blade in and he made another, (finer tpi for Al cutting), there and then, about 5 minutes took it home and fits perfectly.
His reasoning was that the stated blade length in some of the Twianeese Chineese band saws is not always correct . The size in the manual was 2620mm , and the real length was 2633mm.

Also by having all your blades exactially the same length , changing is so much easier, as is setting the tension

Why do they bother making it one at a time? Anyone??
Because it takes bugger all time to cut and weld a new blade and that way they don't have to maintain a stock of 500 different sizes for different machines in different tooth patterns.

Some really there is always room for error. Or they should at least have some kind of templates to cut the length. I mean how hard is it to cut 2 equal lengths? Don't tell me the guy simply uses a measuring tape every time.

Regardless of the size. I wanted 2 blades exactly the same size but instead I got 2 sizes. Whether one is too long or too short, one way or the other the guy has made a mistake.

I don’t want to send it back every time. It isn’t exactly cheap to post a bandsaw blade considering I have already paid for postage.

    G'day Wongo,

Same here and with the same supplier - 3 times the blades went back and after the third time with the right length but wrong tpi I've given up and will just use the blades although I prefer a finer tpi, which I will get next time.

Although their service is good so I will go back.

I ask myself that question a lot. Sounds easy, so how come one is always too short at one end?

G’day Waldo, the guy on the phone is quite pleasant to deal with. I think they have pretty good customer service.

    Silent….oh never mind.
