    Default Sharpening back of blade

    Hi,
I had a talk with a bandsaw saw doctor a year or so ago. Apparently the teeth on a bandsaw blade wear at the tips by getting rounded. By grinding the back of the tooth at the tip, the rounded part of the tip gets taken off and the geometry of the front of the tooth (which is vital for cutting characteristics) is not changed in any way.

I took a quick video of what I tried ... nearly at the end you can see me bonk straight onto a point (again) ...

I think the thickish grinding wheel works quite well (for these large teeth) - it spreads the area the grinder is impacting on - less likely to dig in at a single point I imagine.

Can see it now was just a black box before.

Looks like you've got the technique but from watching the first half, the higher you went from the table the grinder was not square to the blade. you might want to keep an eye on that.

Sorry for not caring about the thread, but that saw blade Paul posted is really HUGE! Really scary!

Went to paste in photos and it froze ... often I copy text to clipboard, but that's usually before posting.

So I saved the screen, and can't bring myself to type it again ... although I've prob typed as much right now ... idiot ...

    Saved it here: err1.PNG

Just before I pressed send, I saw ... for the first time ever ... "Restore Auto-saved Content" in the grey bar at the bottom of the message entry area. How about that.

Wouldn't have worked with the screen frozen, though. ... Right? ...

Not with a frozen screen but when you go back to it, it usually has the option to click it.

Interestingly the cart went a little wobbly for a bit ...

Going back to take more sections off the sheoak the next day, I found it drifting markedly off-line ...

    P1010325.jpg

hmmmm ... thinks to self briefly ... guide blocks. Check the guide blocks.

Half the upper guide blocks I had made from (I think) Marri ... the other two were made from a chromium kind of steel ...

Sure enough ... they'd worn away from the band rubbing ...

    P1010326.jpg P1010328.jpg

I need to replace these with metal also, but for the moment I just trimmed them back.

    P1010329.jpg P1010330.jpg

I also stoned it a little on both sides, mainly the side it was cutting to.

And then took a .404" chainsaw file to the teeth to smooth off burrs and mess that seemed to be on them.
The chainsaw file fitted the hook very well ... it might be because the angle-grinder reshaped things a bit ... I don't know as I hadn't tried it before grinding.
It is very quick to use the chainsaw file - two or three swipes and move on the the next tooth.
I think I'd try using it next time before re-trying the angle-grinder.

Tried another log ... phew ... back on track.
