Bandsaw blade size advice
Hi all well I haven't been around much and have decided to get my act together and get my workshop back in order ,one of the tools that needs some new teeth is my Sherwood bandsaw 14 inch. I have looked online at new blades but on the front guard it says the blade is 2400 now I have trawled through ebay the net and ill be stuffed if I can find a blade of that length. So I then proceeded to timbercon where I asked if they could advice me as to which of there blades would fit ,I have received no reply so far have they go out of business? One company on ebay did reply but were not sure of there blade would fit as it was about 25 mm to short of 2400 any advice on this ?

Most saw sharpening services will make up a BS blade to suit whatever size you want for not that much more than an off the shelf size.

Try Henry Bros in Sydney. I have used them for years and they are great to deal with. They will make them to whatever size you want and give good advice on the types of blades. No affiliation with them except as a customer.

Another vote for Henry Bros. Doesn't matter if they have never heard of your particular saw, just measure required blade length by marking somewhere on the inside and rolling it out carefully on a flat floor until your mark comes around again
I'd check one of your blades that fit anyway - the stated length for my Basato 4 (from the manual) turned out to be wrong when I measured a blade off the machine.....

Hi all thanks for the help well I rang a couple of places and found a mob called elite sharpening services near my home ,took the old blade down and he was amazed that it was the size I said as he had a few madeup for 14 inch bandsaws and none would work. So I ordered a new blade cost 25 dollars which I think is pretty good seeing they have to make it up from the roll ,I just wonder how many others who bought this machine have the same problem it was bought from timbecon and is a Sherwood orange in color near brand new ,oh allan I live in south Australia southern districts

Good job - no stopping you now.
Convenient to have a reasonably local supplier !

Yup, they are really good. I bought/sharpened by blades for my 24" bandsaw there.
I bought an oldish 14" bandsaw and when I checked the length I found that there was a couple of inch leeway in the blade length and found an off the shelf blade. In fact the blade on the saw was maybe a trifle too long and the off-the-shelf blade was a better fit.
I ran the tape measure around the wheels and adjusted the top wheel to gauge the minimum and maximum then worked it out from there.

Hi all well just to reiterate on the original thread I finally got a chance to use the bandsaw and what a pleasure it was to gently push the timber through the saw following the lines I had drawn the blade is a 6mm and I am thinking maybe to get a 10mm as well for larger work I don't really know how large you could go in blade width on a 14 inch but I think 10mm would probably be the max does anyone have any thoughts on max blade size ?

You can go up to the size that stays just clear of the covers really, or to be safe a bit less than the thickness of the wheels. Bigger blades certainly have an advantage in going through thick stock or ripping long stock, you just lose a bit of turning radius.

For your size of saw, I think you'll find a perennial favorite on the forum is a 1/2" 3 tpi bi-metal blade (again, I get mine from Henry Bros). Good all rounder for resawing, etc. I only change to a smaller blade for tight curves.
The bi-metal definitely outlives standard carbon steel blades by probably 2-3 times (depending on what you are cutting), but this is reflected in the higher cost.

Hi Crispy,
I have a 14" Sherwood bandsaw, and currently re-sawing with a 3/4" blade with 1 & 1/3 TPI (supplied & recommended by Henry Bros)
I have made a few mods to the saw, blade tensioning wheel replacing the black plastic knob, improved dust extraction, modified the lower guide bearing assembly to improve alignment, and fitted urethane tyres when the originals failed.
Regards
Keith

Blades again.
Hi Crispy,
Not sure of the length of Blade you bought. Mine is 2375mm. x 3/8in. x 6TPI.
I pay $12.50 at McDiven Saws, Kororoit Creek Road Williamstown, Vic.
Not sure as to what you want to cut, but this is the only Blade I have almost ever used since 1987.
I ran into trouble with the 4 TPI, as you have to have a cradle to cut round wood, but with a 6TPI you can run the wood through with one hand, which suits me, as my biggest wood wood be 4-5in. smallest 1in.
Almost impossible to cut 1in. with a 4TPI Blade, certainly not without a Cradle.
Quite awhile back I wood buy a 100ft. Roll for $81.50, & make up my own blades.
I could get 12 Blades, which wood work out to $7.55 a Blade.
Not real hard to do your own Blades.
Wellthatsmy2senceworth.Regards,
issatree.

Hi all well issatree that's a good price for a blade I paid 25 for my new one so yours is very good , I bought the bandsaw for mainly cutting up pen blanks but have since sold the lathe and all associated tools , I have been looking at some of thse bandsaw boxes and they are really something else would make a lovely gift for someone .I don't know about making my own blades I have seen what happens when a large blade breaks not a good look as I was on the saw so might give that a miss and leave it to the pros , Pedro66 ill have a look at the blades from henry bros as I don't think my local bloke would carry that size I think he has 10mm but ill ask as I said my saw is almost new had very little work so I have all these things like re tyreing wheels to look forward to .
