    Default My first bandsaw (redux)

    My neighbour is disposing of some of his tools. I spotted an old 14 inch bandsaw (about 6 inch cutting capacity). Otherwise, it looks OK. Nice big 3/4HP motor, no cracks in the wheels and a four speed capability. I gave him $150.00 for it. It is a Taiwanese made, Jacob Model VBS-14/4. It has a few issues though:

    * Some surface rust on the cast iron top plate (no thick, chunky stuff, just a rusty colour to the metal).
    * No blade.
    * A missing circular thingy, where the blade goes through the top plate.
    * No fence.
    * Seized bearings (I'll try soaking them in solvent).

    Any ideas where I can obtain the missing parts and how to clean up the top plate? DidI pay too much?

    By a stroke of luck, I happen to have a 2003 issue of Australian Wood Review which has a pretty comprehensive article on tuning bandsaws. I intend to follow the article to the letter, before cutting any wood.

    Throw away the old bearings and put new ones in. Sand off the rust and give it a wipe with oil. make the circular thingy out of 3mm ply. measure the blade length with a piece of string and order a blade from your local saw service. Should be good as new.

    Thanks a bunch for your comments and advice. One remaining question, however:

    What can I do about the missing fence? There is a groove which has been machined into the top plate, in order to accomodate a fence. I guess it's about 2cm wide and 1.5cm deep (I know, I should have measured it). Would the Aussie distributors for Jacob be able to supply it? Who are the Aussie distributors (if they still exist)?

    Thanks again.
