New Bandsaw on the way - Rust Prevention
Hi All,
I usually hang out in the musical Instruments forum section but considering I have a new bandsaw ( my first REAL bandsaw ) on the way , I was wondering what you all use to prevent the table from rusting ?
I want to look after this bandsaw and get it set up correctly so I'm all ears in regards to tips on regular maintenance and such.
The bandsaw is a Hafco BP-355 ( probably a toy to some of you guys ) but its a MAJOR step up from my old GMC 9" bandsaw .
Cheers

Have you tried a forum search under "rust prevention" ? I just did, and came up with heaps of threads on the subject. I'm sure at least a few of the suggestions in these threads will do the job for you.

Coincidentally - exactly what I use....
Can't remember - does the BP-355 have a machined flat table, or one of those corrugated ones? Wax will work fine on either; I have the Scheppach Basato4 with corrugated table top, and a quick wipe and polish with Trad Wax once a month or so does the trick.
Just make sure you thoroughly remove any oil/grease from the surface with solvent before applying the first coat of wax.
Next thing on your shopping list will likely be some better quality blades.....

...and since you are in NSW, I'd suggest giving Henry Bros a call and ask their advice on blades. Tell them what sort of work you want to do, and they'll generally come up with some good recommendations for your saw.

Mr Bush, Thanks again for your helpful tips.
Interesting you should mention blades. . Not knowing a lot about it, I thought I was doing the wright thing and I bought 3 different blades from Hare And Forbes -
6.2mm 6TPI
16mm 6TPI
16mm 3TPI
If these aren't much good, I'll definitely look into getting some decent quality ones, they don't seem to be that expensive to buy.
The main use for the bandsaw is to rough cut the guitar bodies before I route so a few tight-ish curves to negotiate there.
I am also very interested in being able to resaw some timber for bookmatched tops ( max 200mm high )
Cheers
David
