    Default Bandsaw tension spring

As I mentioned before I'm fixing up an old bandsaw.

The blade tension spring is missing.

I have found a place in Dingle, Melb, that has plenty of springs but I'n not sure what sort of compression rating I need.

The saw is pretty big, the wheels are approx 800mm dia.

The shaft the spring fits on is 1" and has approx 50 to 60 mm of space where the spring sits.

Any idea or know the best place to go??

If you are working in isolation, as it seems you are, I'd recommend going to the library and borrowing some of the current crop of bandsaw books - this is a starting point - most of them have tables of 'suggested' tensions for the various widths/thicknesses of bandsaw blades, usually expressed as 'pounds per square inch' as they are Yank books. You should also have a word to whoever you will be using to make up your blades - unlike a 14" saw, you probably won't find many off the shelf blades at the corner hardware store - they may give you different tensions. Then, armed with all this knowledge, go to the spring manufactures & give him the details - round or square cross section, spring maximum diameter, maximum uncompressed length, minimum compressed length, tension required and see what he can do.

If the saw has a brand name, you could try some of the Yank forums - such as Knot's Landing run by Taunton, the FWW people. There are a heap of old tool junkies, and as there are 10x more Yanks than Ozzies, you have about 10 times the chance of finding someone who either knows the original answer or has done it the hard way.
