    Default Bandsaw vibration.

    image.jpg
    Hi all,
I have an old A.A Tyson 20" bandsaw which has a vibration issue.
When running the whole body flutters/rocks front to back about 2mm at top - say 3 times a sec. I have fitted new tyres, new guides(I recommend carter guides), super link belt, pulley and balanced the wheels with weights.
I think it might be the drive shaft? Would anyone know an old hand at this kind of repair/rebuild work round Melbourne?

    Cheers

This is a good site when you need advice in restoring or rebuilding vintage machines, http://owwm.org.

    Hi Tim.

    Very nice saw there

Don't forget our very own: ANTIQUE AND COLLECTABLE TOOLS AND MACHINES

(Here's your pic right-way up too)

Re the vibration ... process of elimination ...

    0. How long have you had it? and how long have you had the vibration?

    1. I guess it is statically stable? ... you have it shimmed underfoot (or not) and it won't respond to a bit of a thump or nudge?

    2. Try it without the bandsaw blade ... see if you get the same effect.

2a. The most basic test would be just the motor with the belts removed, but probably unnecessary.

    3. How much tension is on the blade? I just yesterday 'recommissioned' my big old bandsaw - he's been under covers for maybe six months - and there was some vibration when it was up to speed.

    Thinks ... "hmmm .... "

I had obviously taken tension off the blade - putting it back to where it should be had him running sweetly again.
I suspect this could be your problem.

What width of blade are you using? These old saws will take a good deal of tension.

    Cheers,
    Paul

    Whereabouts in Melbourne are you?

Have a fairly good knowledge of tuning machinery and might be able to help you out depending on location.
    Cheers

    Tim

I think I have the same bandsaw, although I've never been able to identify it......until now !!! Thanks for posting this !!!.

On my saw, the wheels are
    1) not statically balanced (use adhesive tyre balancing weights to correct this)
    2) a loose fit on their shafts (you can rock the wheels on the shafts), and I imagine they must rock in use

both of these adding to vibration.

Would you be so kind as to post a few more pics of your saw, and particularly a pic of the A.A Tyson name plate ?

    Thanks an regards,
    John

    Hi All,
Running 1/2 " blade with enough tension to pull blade out of flutter - tho still have the vibration issue.
Went through the process of elimination and think it's in the drive shaft itself. Also between putting new rubber on the tyres and crowning I may have introduced a high spot.

I'm located in st kilda if you could spare some time to take a look.

Will get more images together to share soon.

    Cheers & thanks.

    Had the saw for 6months
Vibration since I started it up.
    All shimmed and stable.

It's not a huge bother, but its worth sharing & problem solving with you all.

    More photos to come.

    Cheers.

The photo's you have posted absolutely confirm that my (previously unidentified) saw is identical to your AA Tyson 20

Thanks for taking the time to shoot and post these photos - its greatly appreciated. I'm in the process of restoring my saw, and will post progress in this thread https://www.woodworkforums.com/f163/a...andsaw-161535/.

Great to see your saw is in running condition, and getting a workout.

    Thanks and regards,
    John
