    Default Bandsaws and carbide blades- help required.

    Hi All,

    I'm in the market for a bandsaw. An 18" would suit my needs. It will only be used for re-sawing hard woods and would like to use one of those nice carbide blades.

    My problem is that a blade manufacturer stipulates a blade tension of 30,000 PSI. and that lack of tension in the blade is apparently the main cause of poor cuts. Bandsaws that I have looked at are generally around 20,000PSI.
    I understand that the Laguna LT 18 3000 model will probably work but their price has jumped $300 then there is the freight cost from Qld. I would prefer an 18" to a 14" machine.

    To anyone out there currently using an 18" machine with a carbide blade please post your thoughts.

    I have a 21 inch bandsaw with a 1" 2tpi tungsten carbide-toothed blade. I cant see why the same could not be run on an 18" saw. I would not think it a good ideato run it on a 14" saw thaoug, the curve around the wheels would be a bit too tight and would probably quickly cause fatigue in the blade. It would of course fatigue faster on your 18" saw than on my 21" saw though. but I think you would still get plenty of life out of it.
