Belt keeps falling off pulleys
Haven't used my 12 inch Hare and Forbes bandsaw for a while but this weekend after making some cuts the belt keeps falling off the pulleys. I then tightened the belt very tight and the belt falls off before I even start the cut. What gives? I haven't changed the belt before but from what I can see it looks in reasonable condition.

Hi Tiger
you need to check and make sure the pulleys are in line, if they are not then the belt will climb the side of the pulley and off. Make sure that when you tightened the belt that you pulled the motor down (or however it adjusts) square not crooked or twisted. Get torch or a good light so yo can see clearly. If you can run a straight edge or a piece of string between the pulleys to see if they look in line. Also check the belt does not have any grooves running along the drive faces. It is most likely the motor out of alignment though.

Further to the instructions of the right honourable Mr Hama, check that the bandsaw pulley isn't loose on the shaft. The grub screw that holds it in place may have come loose allowing it to move along the shaft.

Yep good point, from The Archer, this will also put it out of alignment.

Thanks to Claw and NC. From memory because I'm at work now, I have a handle which tightens the pulley. The handle is connected to a threaded screw which moves a pulley along the threaded screw, this pulley seems a bit wobbly but from what I remember, there is a circlip which holds it together. I've never had a problem with this pulley before so a bit of a mystery but pretty sure that pulleys are in line with each other.

If the pulleys are inline and not worn or damaged it must be the belt. A belt is worth maybe $20 at the most so you can always get a new one and eliminate the belt being the problem.

I had a closer look at the pulleys, they all seem in alignment, the belt is multi ribbed but some of the ribs are worn. Are these belts readily available from bearings suppliers?

The belt is described in the instruction manual as a poly v belt. It is about 12 mm wide and has 4 grooves in it, not sure what section that is.

It's usualy printed on the belt itself but your maybe a specialised belt. Check the belt or maybe go to the dealer of the machine. If the pulleys are in line and not damaged it has to be the belt.

Lawn mower repair shops are a good source of belts if you don't have a specialist belt shop nearby. Take the old one with you.

Thanks guys for your help to date. Have contacted H & F who tell me that my machine has been superseded. They are not sure that the newer model's belt will fit mine, they suggest buy it and see but no credit available if it's not alright. Have tried 3 bearings/belt suppliers none of them have it. Have attached photo of the belt. 4 grooves approx 2.3 mm apart and 10 mm wide and about 600 mm long. Does anyone know of the name of these types of belts and where they can be found?

Any writing on the back?
If you are unable to find a new belt you can purchase two pulleys and a belt to suit. Not the cheapest option but you may have no choice. Those were the droids I was looking for.
