    Default Busted Bandsaw.

    Hi All,
    I've never struck this before.
    Last Fri. the Temp. was between 45 - 50 Deg. in my friends Workshop, in Torquay, Vic.
    Went to use the B/Saw Sat. Morn. Shocking noises ???.
    Had a look at the back & a piece near the top wheel had broken. Something to do with the Bearing, I have not seen it as yet.
    As he said, he never releases the tension on the Blade ever. I don't either, & never will.
    You wood have thought the Blade wood have expanded, rather than contract, breaking the Saw.
    Now that I think about it, it may have had a flaw.
    Carbi-Tec 14in. Saw, approx. 10 yrs old, done heaps of work, but no replacement parts, online anyway.
    Anybody know where parts are available ???.

    Can't help with advice on repairs or spare part sources other than see what Carbatec suggest, sorry.

    But it strikes me that all the metal parts will be affected by temperature change. Thermal effects on different metals occurs at diff rates. The blade didn't contract in absolute terms. It simply didn't expand to the same extent as the body/frame and pulleys. I would have thought blade and pulleys could reach operational temps higher than 45c so maybe it's primarily frame expansion.

    Whatever the root cause, it's food for thought.

    Sadly with many even so called name brands there is no spare parts backup. I found out the hard way with a lathe.

    ps One of the reasons for releasing the tension on the band is to preserve the camber of the tyres & to prevent flat spots on the tire if it is left unused for long periods of time.

    Is it an old SBW-1401?



    If so, I may have the compleat spring/tensioner assembly at my old shed in Vic. I broke the upper wheel on mine (don't ask!) and ratted parts off another 'corpse.' It's not the sort of thing I'd throw away, either... never know when you'll need one. Y'know?

    Sadly, it'll be a while before I'll be able to head down there again to even look to be sure. Maybe Feb or Mar at the earliest.
    I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    G'day isatree!

    If it is a Carbatec BAS350 (14 inch) BS then it takes the standard 6203Z bearings available from any bearing outlet. 1 pair per wheel. DAMHIK But just check and take one of the bearings with you when seeking a replacement. Apparently there are two different (but very close) bearings with the same number - go figure.

    If the wheel is damaged a replacement should be available through CT.
