Default Decisions, decisions, 14/12 or 14BX?

I am in need of some assistance with a major dilemma I have on my hands.

After many months of reading review after review of just about every 14" bandsaw on the market I finally decided that my very first bandsaw was to be a Laguna 14/12. All I then had to do was build up enough brownie points and stash away a wad of folding stuff into the cunning kick. Easy peasey I thought.

Well the time has finally come after returning home from my last 3 week stint working out west, the cunning kick is now full(ish).

Logging on to the Gregory Machinery website full of anticipation I was unexpectedly sideswiped by Laguna ........ I find they have introduced an upgraded bandsaw, the 14BX. The rotten sods.

So what to do? Do I stick with the 14/12 or go with the upgraded version? The main differences I can see between the new and old is a larger 2.5hp motor, foot brake and power socket for a light, and an extra $400.

I intend to be mainly resawing Aust hardwood and some western NSW acacia with a Resaw King blade plus I have a bit of douglas fir, western red cedar and red meranti stashed away.

Has anyone used both these machines and can offer an opinion? Anybody else with an opinion please feel free to comment as well.

    Thanks in advance

If they had the BX a year ago, I would have bought it - I bought the 14/12. The extra grunt will be appreciated if you are resawing hardwood. My 14/12 struggles with blackwood more than 6 inches wide.

Thanks Swifty, I was sort of thinking along those lines. How do you rate your 14/12?

I bought the LT14 SUV 3 years ago for hardwood resawing as it takes a full 25mm blade as well as having more grunt in the 3hp motor. Choosing the right machine for you will most likely depend on the size of the resawing you're planning (and how often). I regularly resaw tall (200mm) and thick (up to 75mm) jarrah without any problems with a home-built tall fence. Looking at the specs on the 14BX it seems fine apart from max blade width (19 vs 25mm), so the Resaw King blade would not be an option. At $250+ you'll need to be doing a lot of serious resewing to justify that blade and you'll need the bigger machine. I rarely use my 25mm blade these days as the 19mm works fine on big stock, and I have a 12mm setup mostly because its more flexible for other jobs and handles smaller resaws well. I think the extra power in the 14BX would be a better choice, and its also nearly 50kgs heavier which is good. Good luck.

Well twosheds I am quite happy with my 14/12, I mostly use it for breaking down small green logs for turning, and for cutting round blanks. I made jigs for crosscut, rip and circle sawing. I do have the 19mm King Resaw blade and it is a marvel. I can get 1mm veneers easily (after Snodgrass-ing my set up) but I don't do this often.

Thanks for your input Swifty and CharlieZ. The decision is now made - 14BX.

On Saturday I made a last minute decision to go down to the Newcastle Wood Show. I was lucky to find Trend Timbers had the 14BX and the SUV on display side by side. After a bit of a look see and a chat with the Trend Timbers staff I was sold on the14X.

I would definitely choose the 14BX over the 14/12. Good choice. On the other hand, I faced a similar dilemma about six months ago; 14BX vs 14SUV and ended up getting the Laguna LT18 18" saw. I am very glad I went with the larger saw (along with a 1 1/4 Resaw King blade, Veneer king fence and driftmaster fence system). I'm sure you'll be very happy with the 14BX!
