DIY New tires for large bandsaws, help offered.
G'day,
I bought a big old Sagar bandsaw which has wheels about 750mm or 30 inches. It needed new tires and the cheapest quote I could find was $1500 per wheel!
I decided to do it myself. I spent many hours thinking of what rubber would work and how I could put the rubber on and then machine it so that it would spin absolutely true.
Well, it cost me around $80, two days work and it worked beautifully.
I didn't photograph my method but I'm very happy to share it with anyone wanting to do the same thing.
Feel free to contact me if you'd like any tips.
Cheers
The photo is taken before I did the new tires and set up new guards etc.
PS Does anyone have any idea how old this machine might be? It was made pre ball bearings and is a VERY solid machine.
Curlywood.

New tyres are reasonably cheap from Carter Products in the US. I just got 4 tyres and two tubes of adhesive from them $120 IIRC... of which $50 was freight.
$36 each for 30" tyres

Thanks for that. Hopefully I won't have to do it again for a very long time.
You would still have to put a crown on these tires wouldn't you?

To quote the instructions from Carters...
"Some bandsaws have crowned wheels and some don't. If your bandsaw does not have crowned wheels, crowning will be necessary for satisfactory tracking."

Yeah my wheels are flat so had to work out a way to crown them. Seems to have worked well. Just spent some time today taking a fence off a very old rip saw, removing all the rust etc and fitting it to the bandsaw. I think it will do the job nicely.
I like the old machinery, super solid and no plastics or bolts that are too small and strip the threads or heads.
Been having fun with this one, she's a beauty.
