I am very fond of the kgs300 series of EB or metabo drop saws but the market has progressed would be worth a look arround.
If gpoing for the kgs300 get the plus version with dust extraction & electronic brake if you can spend the extra.
the article in the last wood review seemed pretty good on the 16" band saw market.
cant comment much on the thicknesser or wood lathes excep to say that many of the same products pop up in everybodies catalogue.
a mate has just baught a carbatec big boy sander and recons its wonderfull.
Drill presses are all over the place check for play & accuarcy & a bigger motor is an advantage. A work light is good too.

Folks,
Now time has moved on, what was the outcome to the selection process. I am asking as I was actually recommended to buy an EB by a professional turner so was very surprised to read Christopha's comments.
Any advice / opinion is as always welcome!
Simon.

For my needs (so far), the EB is smooth running, quiet, has a good and easy to set fence, decent size (and solid) table, and seems quite capable of making accurate cuts.
I do have one gripe though; apparently EB have as an accessory a "precision blade guide" kit - but it's over $320! I guess that I'll be staying with the standard set-up for now /

Well Dingo 18 months on now
I noticed one of these forementioned EB Bandsaws at the auction today ... don't think I'll go down and bid ... what did you end up with? How much? Are you happy?
I'd really like to rip at least 10" (preferrably 12" but 10 is realistic $$$ wise)Ramps

I got mine at a special price, I wanted a 16"model they advertised but they had none left and because I was spending up there they gave me the BAS470 for and extra $100 on top of the price of the 16"!
Short answer...$1040
Yeah she works ok but it does have a few shortfalls, top wheel adjusting carriage has slop and needed to be shimmed, the original guide bearings died real quick(all of them!). Blade was unusable. The top wheel supposedly balanced isnt has a 1mm buckle which transfer's to the blade this is no harm with big blades but small blades affects the quality of cut.
It does what it was brought for well tho, resawing it can take up to a 38mm blade, I run a 32mm 1.5tpi for resawing... cuts through 10 inches of hardwood like butter!....................................................................

What Harry said Ramps... the 18in from TC bit of a discount not as good as Harrys but a discount none the less... its been brilliant so far.
Table is strong cast iron a bit small I think and may well make an extention for it, no probs with anything really... the setup of the blades a bit of a mongrel having to bend down constantly when I had a bung knee wasnt the best of things and ended up getting it near enough is good enough but it wasnt really but will sort it properly when I get back... I bought the range of blades at the time thinnest through to largest 1 1/2in I think big mean looking sucker! and so far have only used 1 of them the one it came with!! Its been able to do everything Ive asked of it without a murmur... although Im yet to toss some of the larger logs at it at which time I will change the blade to the one Ive termed the "meanbitch"!!... all I did to her was to move her to a better spot in the shed and she drew first blood! rotten sod
But yeah mate Im happy with it and no doubt when Ive bolted it to the floor and set her up better and changed the blade and set up the re-saw rig I will know how BIG a log she can take without pharting!
ooh and the fence? Peice of ali crap why they persist in supplying shyte fences with these bloody tools is beyond me! I mean whats so flamin hard about supplying a first rate fence or at least one to match the machine for gawds sake!... good machine pay a 1000+ for it and the fence is a peice of crap? gawd I hate that! otherwise bloody good buy mateBelieve me there IS life beyond marriage!!! Relax breathe and smile learn to laugh again from the heart so it reaches the eyes!!
