no no no
gday,
do not buy this bandsaw it is a piece de caque as the french say. I just ruined a $50 guitar neck on the very beast...got it for free from my dad, and its going back to him with some savage hammer marks in it. So im in the market for a bandsaw as well. if you really dont want to spend money on a saw, look at ryobi, at least they have a 375 watt model for quite cheap. but from what ive read on this forum, that will be not good enough. It would be better to get someone to saw for you, even if you pay them, until you can shell out the bucks for a decent machine.
Cheers, and nver ever trust GMC.

You don't say what you want the saw to do. Straight or curved cuts or circles.
I bought a BS250 from carbatech (similar in size) and while this is nice little saw for small jobs is a bit out of its depth with any thing large.
I can cut a turning blank from 50mm jarrah if I am careful and take it very slow.
I should have bought a 14" saw and life would be a lot easier.

i need to cut through 5cm thick mahogany blocks. that's the thickest wood i'll be using on the saw, mostly straight cuts

I thought the pro's used a good scroll saw.
Try HAFCO..CARBATEC and see what they have on offer, as stated a 14" is a good starter, I started with a little one and very very soon went to a 1.5hp 14" with plenty of grunt, can even cut down to 1mm veneer without too much stress, have a good look at blade options too.Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

cant afford much more than $200. so the smallest possible to be able to cut through 5cm thick of mahogany would be good.

will be interested to see if you can get anything decent for that money.
