    Default Hare & Forbes BP-355

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has some feedback on the H&F BP-355 bandsaw. I really don't think I can afford the $1600 for the Laguna 14/12 and I'm not sure if its worth the extra $600. I know it gets a lot of good reviews but is the BP-355 a good bandsaw also?

    Thanks for your help, Peter.

I have had one for 5 years and am very happy with it. A good value for money saw.

Thanks for the feedback John, do you do any resawing with it and if so what size boards do you cut?

It will cut the full 10'' depth whthout any problems. I made high fence for resawing that adjusts for drift. I can cut really thin slices with it. Most of my thick stock cutting is for turning blanks however.
The dust extraction is a bit basic with a port in the lower compatment and have to open the door every so often and suck it out when the dust builds up. Mind you I am only using a shop vac so with a real DC things may be better.
A pic of the adjustable fence.

I have had one since 2008 and have had no problems with it. The dust collection is basic, but I cut a 90mm hole in the baffle in the bottom compartment and have had not problems since.

Hey Rob, any chance you could let us know how you cut the 90mm hole and perhaps post a pic or two of the finished job?

I just got a bp-355 second hand & noticed the baffle restricts the extraction port somewhat.

I was thinking of drilling a series of small holes to aid air flow but maybe the larger single hole would be better.

    Thanks.

I just used a 90 mm holesaw to drill a hole right through the centre. You could probably do a series of smaller holes that over lap and achieve the same effect. I am currently in brisbane for the next week but will post a photo when I get back.

Can someone explain why the baffle is there anyway?

    Rob,
Thanks for the feedback. I look forward to seeing your pics if you get the time.

    Arron,

I have no idea. Its got me "baffled"...

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.
My daughter would call this a "Dad joke"

    Arron,

I looked at that baffle again & I think it's purpose is to support the drive belt tensioning mechanism.

Not sure, but it's my best guess.

I've made a removable shroud of thin acrylic sheet that was cut & joined to form a box form (three sided ) which surrounds the lower guides. Replaces the lower blade guards actually & secured by the original bolts.
This helps prevent the sawdust being spread in all directions from underneath the table & retains most of it so it can be sucked through the slot where the blade enters the lower cabinet. A big improvement but I'm still thinking of ways I can attach a secondary vac hose in this area. Work in progress.
