Default Help: Hammer N4400 (3 phase) owners

If you own a 3 phase Hammer N4400 (probably a N3800 too), and a camera... I need your help.

I'm trying to work out whether a VFD conversion to single phase is worthwhile - there's a 2nd hand unit on machines4u. Waiting for Felder to get back to me on a single phase motor price, (expect it to be about the value of two kidneys), but would like to get a picture of the 3 phase motor spec plate for the forum boys to look at and suggest whether it's possible to do a conversion. I need the plate on the motor, not the machine, and possibly a picture of the inside of the junction box on the motor.

This is very promising but until we see the inside of the mains/motor connection box we won't be 100% sure this is possible

    Sorry for the delay.

What we need t see is the inside of junction box on the motor itself.

Taking the plate at face value and I would because the same saw is sold in the US and I can't see Felder mislabelling a motor you could use a VFD to run this from a single phase supply. If I had known this saw was available it wouldn't still be there but I would not so that to you.

Ah, sorry I miss understood. I will have to pass on pulling my motor to pieces as I am world re-known for not being able to reassemble things and have them work again.

You don't have to pull it apart. Just lift the cover off the junction box on the motor and photo the connections inside.

Does anyone seriously think that Felder would install a motor that did not match the plate? The saw cold be run at 240v three phase using a VFD and that would make it a very versatile bandsaw.

I agree it's very unlikely, just adopting a full belt and braces approach.

I have seen a few European motors, (eg ASEA/ABB and the Techno Motori motor on my Italian Belt sander) with motor internals that did not quite match the name plate.
On these motors even though the motor name plate and even some of the internal metal casting show ∆/Y conversions but the motor was hard wired as a Y.

Taken my life in my hands and pulled, I hope, the correct plate off.

Machine still works which is amazing for me. Wife would kill me if I broke it.

Thank you all for the advice, and MrSlow for going the extra mile with those pics! What a forum

Chris and Bob, I hope I can bother you with more specific VFD advice if I secure the saw.

I'm going to give the seller a ring and have a chat. I have a sparky friend who has plenty of experience with VFD's. He reckons the VFD he'd be able to get would be around $550 wholesale, but I have a vague recollection that the Powtrans that users here have been using might be a bit cheaper, and as effective?

Thanks for posting the pics Mr Slow, the Motor junction box photo completely confirms the motor is 240 3P ∆ compliant.

    Now re the VFD.

$550 wholesale is very steep for a VFD for what is effectively a 3HP machine. I would expect to pay less than half that for a retail on-line price. This highlight the problem with some sparkys and VFD - most of them will not want to read and study a new VFD manual so they go for something they are familiar with, maybe they have used the same one in industry and there they are less likely to worry about price. That aside you should go with what your sparky suggests as he will be the one guaranteeing the work and eh won't want to come.
