Home made bandsaw
I was just wondering, has anyone tried to make a bandsaw? If so are there any threads I could read?

Hi
Try here;
http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...hlight=bandsaw
Still think though;
All power to you if you decide to build one.
But jigs are one thing, spinning snarling cutting hacking killing metal teeth are another and I wouldnt feel comfortable with it.
Good luck

If you're a member of www.finewoodworking.com you can still get access to fine woodworking article mentioned in the thread dazzler mentioned in PDF format ... I see Dazzler stil hasn't changed his opinion

Its a museum piece from USA.
It NEEDS PROPER GUARDS, if you make a saw like this.
so it may loose some of its attractiveness.
Theres sufficient detail in the pics to build a reasonable version of it.
Unfortunately I just kept the pics for my own reference and don't think I have the url. I just did a google on the image names and didn't find anything

Thanks Bob, just a thought if the weather is not to my liking, it looks an interesting project
Chain link fencing would most probably get over the guarding problem and running observatation could still be maintained!woody U.K.

Here's a pearler ... on a vintage tools site from popular mechanic or some such.
http://www.vintageprojects.com/power-tools/bandsaw.html
"The original cost in 1940 of building these plans was four dollars." but must be US$ so you'd have to do the conversion to pounds.
I put this one specially for Dazzler as it has BOTH sides of the blade exposed
and also the one made from pipes but this you need the model-T ford front wheels ... I think I'd stick to making the wagon wheels )Ramps

building yr own bandsaw

If I was making a bandsaw (I was going to, but managed to buy one instead) I was going to make the wheels from chipboard, I was thinking to use 2 old heavy electric motors for wheel bearings, I wasn't going to disasemble the motors at all, just mount each wheel onto the motor shaft and fit each motor onto the frame. And I was going to use laminated chipboard for the frames. A 3rd motor would have driven it.
If the top wheel motor could be run as a generater through a resistence, that would put tension on the blade, I beleve saw mills do this.
Something unusal I was thinking of, which I don't know would work, was the top wheel would tilt for tracking, the bottom wheel would go up and down for blade tension. does anybody know if this would work?
Popular Mechanics had some books around about the '40s which went into a number of editions "60 Power Tools you can make" and "40 Power Tools you can make" hich had various band saw designs http://www.lindsaybks.com/ is a site selling such books, reprints. I have had good service there.
And in my files, I have a download of a 3 or 4 page aticle from PM, if Shaver wants to contact me, I will dig it out.Peter Lateral Thinker
