Question Jet 14" - Riser Block

    Chaps,

I have a jet 14" m/c and 90% of the time the standard capacity is fine. Occasionally I have the need to attach a deeper cut so I am thinking of getting the riser block kit.

Following the normal rule of keeping as much support at the cut as possible, do those of you that have the saw with a riser kit leave it in all the time, or just fit it for the deep cuts and leave the machine without the block for the rest of the time?

If you leave it in, do you notice any change in the rigidity of the machine? Does it effect the depth of blade you can use?

    Thanks for any advice

    Simon.

IMHO 99% wouldnt remove it once installed, its not a five minute job.
The only concern that I can see is if the blade guard/guides would come right down after its fitted or will it stop 6" above the table, maybe the kits have an extended one?

I have an extension fitted to my 14" Delta, which is a 1st cousin to the Jet.

    1) they come with an new extended blade guard that goes up the main column & an extended rod to hold the moveable guide block unit. Both entirely replace the old parts.

    2) If you like taking the thing apart all the time, you are due for a trip to the padded cell. It is a fairly big undertaking & you may need a special spanner/socket set to remove the old bolt holding the top on & replace it with the new, longer bolt. The old bolt is good for throwing at local wildlife that is digging up your garden. Having a fit helper available is a great bonus, I did it myself, just, and a 2nd pair of hands would have been great.

    3) You need to replace all your old blades with longer ones. If you have a supply of un-used ones, see if you can return them or see if there is some local woodie interested in them.

    late reply but ...
bsrlee's notes re the Delta are completely common to my 14' JET except a standard spanner will do the job. Once you've added the riser block and bought the longer blades there's no point in going back.
I must remember however to not dig holes in his garden!!
