Thread: Jet or Carbi-tech bandsaw

Hi Martin,

Yes those Hitachi resaws are the bees knees, but they cost about 3 or 4 times more than the 18" jet, and they take a 3" blade. Gilet guitars in Sydney have one that I had a good look at last time I was there, very nice, but expensive to buy and I've no idea what the bands would cost - the mind boggles.

I think you could get by with a 14" bandsaw with a riser block, if that's what you happen to have.

I build acoustics, right now I'm looking into aussie timbers, but just when you identify a candidate, you find out that it's prone to spliting - like burdekin plum. My next guitar will be tassy blackwood/englemann, but I'm looking at tassy myrtle, queensland maple, and new guinea rosewood. I've got some really nice ringed myall that looks like it might make good fingerboards and bridges.

Trying to get guitars made while renovating the house is pretty challenging, I don't seem to be making a whole lot of headway other than getting tooled up, and buying timber and supplies for when the house is finished and I get my life back.

Renovating a house and building guitars at the same time...it can be done, its what I'm doing right now. SWMBO is starting to ask questions like "if you can spend the time and money on your **** workshop then why cant you spend the time and money getting the lounge painted??". Its getting harder and harder to fob her off so it looks like next time back from work I'll be painting the lounge instead of getting stuck into the Torres classical. Looks like Im going to have to take a few months off early next year just so I can get some guitar building done...very frustrating.

This story sounds very familiar, both Paul and Martin, and today I became the proud owner of a Jet 18", but SWMBO who of course helped me unload it from the trailer and then issued instructions "You better finish my house before you start using that thing, you should have been finished ages ago ".

Following me into the shed and almost in the same sentence without drawing breath came the list of items to be made, as I had told how I needed this to resaw timber for the furniture projects.

So not feeling left out and feeling like I’ve heard those thoughts before “I think I’ll have to take some time off to get some work done” I look forward to this weekend in the shed fine tuning the new toy. The first lot of timber has been sitting waiting for this for quite a few months, now the waiting is over and the moment of truth has arrived.

Thanks to all those who contribute to this forum, it has made my and many others choices easy. As a newcomer to this forum I look forward to being able to contribute myself.
