Ended up pulling it open.

Calling it a tension guage is a bit rich. It should be called an "Arbitrary Needle That Rests Under A Washer".

There's is no strain guage or anything pseudo-engineering.... No, it's a spring to apply pressure to the wheel mechanism below, a squared washer on top and a small hook simply sits under the washer.

It's incapable of measuring anything other than an arbitrary location from the time you decide to stop winding the wheel raising knob to the time you turn the large lever. Even this is compromised for if the blade is shorter than about 125" it will simply register "maximum" (what ever that may be) as it simply cannot move further.

Terrible terrible design.

Mine has never worked. Just hangs limply.
Didnt see a real need for it so I left it.

As mentioed above, the guages are only there as a rough, very rough guide and cannot be relied upon for settings.

Then it should sing. Tension is how the blade feels and sounds and you will soon get used to what is right.
