Musing about upgrading a bandsaw
I have the older Generic 14" bandsaw sold by Carbatec and the like. I have upgraded to upper and lower bearings from the standard blocks. The motor is woeful at 1/2 horsepower and I find resawing a very slow process.
I have 2 questions,
Firstly for resawing up to 150mm is it worthwhile upgrading the motor to somethingbin the 2hp range or,
Secondly, purchase a bandsaw that is somewhat dedicated to resawing and keep the current one for smaller work. If so what size and brand would you recommend?
Thanks everyone

I'm not expert but if I had the space I'd keep my 14 inch for curves and buy a bigger one e.g. 18 inch 2kw+ for resawing.

That's a beast compared to your 14". Do you have the 15 amp outlet for it to run off?
I agree with Dave, if you have the room keep the smaller one for your small work. Put a 1/4" blade on it and you will be able to do most of your curvy work.Dallas

You will be blown away with the difference when you get that. There is no substitute for grunt when you want to resaw anything thick. Been there with the generic 14''. Even put in a 1 hp motor but still struggled.

I have a similar small bandsaw, but with a 1.5 hp motor. Get the bigger saw. It’s still a very slow process re-sawing, as the saw still struggles with thick low tooth count blades

At that price I’d be looking at something like a used hammer, not sure if this one is single phase, but I like my felder bandsaw from the same manufacturer https://www.machines4u.com.au/view/a...andsaw/505959/
A bandsaw of this size is a very different beast, its a wood eating machine with a 25mm band. I would only keep the little one if you have a huge shed, changing a bandsaw blade and adjusting guides isn’t a big deal.

I’m the kind of person who could use a combination machine, I tend to do one step on all pieces, move to next step and set up the machine. YMMV

Incidentally I have been looking at the Hammer, I think it is the N4400 model. It looks like a quality saw.

There are quite a few n4400 owners here, my favourite accessories from the felder range are the mobile wheel kit and the table extensions.

I rang the Hammer distributer today and enquired about the n4400, prices start hi 3k which is too much for me.
Went to Gregory and looked at the Laguna which I believe is well made and the mid range model is around 2.3k. I went to Hare and Forbes afterwards and looked at their BP480 which incedently is on special till April 30 for a shadecover 2k. I personally think that the Laguna is a better saw.
Anyway, just to compare, I am off tomorrow morning to view an ex School bandsaw, unsure of brand/model/ phase even as pic was grainy and seller bought a bulk lot from auction. Cord is cut so I am very wary about it working.
