    Default MWE-Woodman vs Hammer N4400

So, I am about to zing out and go buy a new bandsaw this week. I'm all set to get a Hammer, and planning to go to their sale later this week in Sydney.

I nicked out this morning to pick up a new dado blade (don't ask!) and got a Freud one from Major Woodworking. While I'm there, I find they have a (new , I think) bandsaw line, the "MWE-Woodman-BS17 Bandsaw"

    see Major Woodworking Equipment

Now that puts me in a wee quandary. This has a 300mm+ resaw capacity, though only a 2HP motor (which is good in one way - no special power sockets needed). They tell me that they have the schools contract for these saws.

    I'd love opinions....

    Phil

Those saws are the same base saw as the Carbatech and H&F BS, but the fence is the same as the Carbatech version while the wheels are like the H&F version. Carbatech's is also $120 less while H&Fs is $240 less. The carbatech does have a 5 year warranty.

I have the Carbatech 19" 2 HP version (I got it on special last year for the same price as the H&F 17") and it cuts 300 mm fine but my planer jointer is only 250 wide and I typically don't cut more than 200 wide anyway. The key thing with bandsaws is quality sharp blades. If you can afford it I'd get the Hammer otherwise shop around a bit more and see what else you can find.

Phil, I am using a Carba-Tec/Woodman style BS I regret buying and will one day get the Hammer N4400 to replace it. One of my few tool regrets.

Given the chance to buy again it would be the Hammer without a seconds hesitation.
