N4400 Hammer Bandsaw
I recently purchased this saw after reading several favorable comments on this forum. However Phil had some problems with this machine which I encountered as well. He had a problem with blade tracking on the bottom wheel where the blade tracked at the very front edge of the wheel. My machine did the same but I managed to fix this by adjusting the lower wheel axle in the axle housing at the back of the machine under the motor. There are 4 bolts which hold the axle and by loosening and tightening opposing bolts (after removing the bolt at the centre of the axle) the tilt of the axle can be adjusted and the blade can be made to track in the middle of the tyre or anywhere else for that matter.(e.g. to bring the blade back from the front loosen the top bolt and tighten the bottom one. The lock nuts have to bee loosened of course)
The tracking at the front edge of the wheel also meant that the back of the blade was not square to the table and hence the guide post was not following the blade in up and down adjustments. Adjusting the tracking to the correct position also squared the blade to the table and solved this problem. Also this model has 45º tilt not like earlier models that only tilted to 22.5º.
I agree with Phil that the mitre gauge is rather flimsy compared to the rest of the machine which is built very solidly. Unfortunately the information about the blade tracking is not mentioned in the User's manual and I got the information from the Felder Service Technician. His name is Ron, Ph: 0414 660 995 who was very helpful.
I am very happy with the performance: Straight cuts, square and true with no drift and plenty of power.

Hi BF
The mitre gauge looked so flimsy that I did not bother purchasing one. Instead I made my own.
I had a mitre gauge from a table saw, which formed the basis. The steel guide is, as you know, non-standard in width and thickness. I discovered that the cheap Chinese clamps made an almost perfect fit: good on depth and just required a little filing for the width ...

Further to the above I forgot to mention that prior to adjusting the tilt of the lower wheel it is important to move the blade guides out the way to allow the blade to go backwards. DAMHIKT, and readjust afterwards

Thanks for the heads up. I've recently placed an order for one so will keep it in mind when I take delivery. Considering the general high build quality of most Hammer machinery I find it odd that the quality of the miter gauge is poor. Luckily I convinced the supplier to include a miter gauge without extra charge but by the sounds of it will be looking for an alternative anyway.

Hi Derek,
I was thinking along the same lines and I think I will make my own miter gauge even though I do not a lot of crosscutting on the tablesaw as most of this is done on the tablesaw.

After quite a few initial problems
I finally had the opportunity to run my Hammer N4400. Great machine - tracks well, rip fence is nice and true and cuts easily through some really hard material (I ripped a piece of Queen Ebony without breaking a sweat). Echoing what others have said AVOID the mitre fence. I have it and it is cheap and nasty. Unfortunately the table slot is of a non-standard width so it wont take an aftermarket crosscut fence without some work on your part.

I have to agree that when my mitre gauge arrived I thought it was a bit below the Hammer standard. I also purchased an aluminium outfeed extension for my saw and fairdinkum it is made of the absolute best material; so impressive.

History repeats
Hi Blackforester,
just to let you know that I had the same problem with the bottom wheel alignment with my Hammer bandsaw when it was delivered in 2009. Also, check the alignment of the table mounting bracket with the frame - mine is slightly out of parallet by about 10degrees.
PITA when I spent that much $$$.

Could you maybe give a little more info regarding the bottom wheel fix? I have the same problem with my recently delivered N4400. Just wanting to check that it is as straightforward as you've made it sound.
The miter gauge is woeful. Going to have to find an alternative asap.

How to find detailed instructions on adjusting bottom wheel of Hammer N4400 bandsaw
Hi,
I posted detailed instructions on how to adjust the bottom wheel of a Hammer N4400 bandsaw back in June 2010
Search this forum using the words:
hammer blade stay on
and then look for my thread (Paul Cleary - 16th June 2010) - the instructions are in part 2 of the thread.
This worked well for me and I have not had any more problems.
Cheers

Just got my self one of these bandsaws... cut like a dream and now to get some advice from those of far more experience than myself.
The guilds for the blade... the round pads on the ends of the adjustor are not tight andthe right one lay on a angle to the blade ...the top touches the blade first.
Is this bit adjustable? see pic
The bottom set looks ok
Thanks for you suggestion
